Muscle: Fundamental Biology and Mechanisms of Disease will be the first reference covering cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle in fundamental, basic science, translational biology, disease mechanism, and therapeutics. Currently there are no publications covering the science behind the medicine, as the majority of books are 90% clinical and 10% science. Muscle: Fundamental Biology and Mechanisms of Disease will discuss myocyte biology, also known as muscle cell biology, providing information about the science behind clinical work and therapeutics with a 90% science and 10% clinical focus. A needed resource for researchers, clinical professionals, postdocs, and graduate students, this publication will further discuss basic biology development and physiology, how processes go awry in disease states, and how the defective pathways are targeted for therapy. This book will assist both the new and experienced clinician's and researcher's need for science translation of background research into clinical applications, bridging the gap between research and clinical knowledge.

Muscle disease represents an important health threat to the general population. For thousands of years, a cure has been deemed extremely remote, if not impossible, for many relentless muscle diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The cloning of muscle disease genes and the prospect of introducing the normal gene to diseased muscle by gene therapy finally bring the hope of a cure. Tremendous progress has been made chasing the muscle gene therapy dream over the past two decades. Valuable information is scattered in the literature. This book represents the first compilation specifically dedicated to issues related to muscle gene therapy. It offers a much needed, up-to-date overview and perspective on the current strategies and status of muscle gene therapy. It covers the cutting edge development of a variety of fascinating strategies such as exon-skipping, AAV gene therapy, RNAi and stem cell approaches. With contributions from prominent investigators in the field, it provides a framework to translate bench science to clinical practice in the upcoming years. This book is a must-have for anyone who is interested in muscle gene therapy including established investigators, clinicians, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, funding agencies, patients and their families and friends.

Although best known for its role in heart disease, the sarcomere--the fundamental unit of muscle contraction--is also involved in skeletal muscle diseases. Chapters in The Sarcomere and Skeletal Muscle Disease provide an up-to-date review of diseases caused by mutated proteins in the different sub-compartments of the sarcomere, document the techniques currently being used to investigate the pathobiological bases of the diseases, which remain largely unknown, and discuss possible therapeutic options.

To help better prepare nations for the increase in disability brought about by musculoskeletal conditions, a Scientific Group meeting was held to map out the burden of the most prominent musculoskeletal conditions. In particular, the Group gathered data on the incidence and prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, major limb trauma, and spinal disorders. Data was collected and organized by world region, gender, and age groups to assist with the ongoing WHO Global Burden of Disease 2000 study. The Group also considered what is known about the severity and course of thes
