Abstract

The essays in Canadian Cultural Exchange / Échanges culturels au Canada provide a nuanced view of Canadian transcultural experience. Rather than considering Canada as a bicultural dichotomy of colonizer/colonized, this book examines a field of many cultures and the creative interactions among them. This study discusses, from various perspectives, Canadian cultural space as being in process of continual translation of both the other and oneself.

Abstract

Abstract

Australia, Canada, and Ireland are all engaged in questions of multiculturalism and in the politics of recognition and reconciliation, the opportunities and pressures of geographic regionalism, shifts in political agendas associated with the impact of neo-liberalism, and moves to frame political agendas less at the macro-level of state intervention and more at the level of community partnership and empowerment. In related but distinct ways, each state is being challenged to devise policies and offer outcomes that address an unfolding and unsteady synthesis of issues relating to citizen

Abstract

Over the past decade, scholars and policy makers interested in Canadian multiculturalism have begun to take religion much more seriously. Moreover, Christian communities have become increasingly aware of the impact of ethnic diversity on church life. However, until very recently almost no systematic academic attention has been paid to the intersection between the ethnic and religious identities of individuals or communities. This gap in both our academic literature and our public discourse represents an obstacle to understanding and integrating the large numbers of "ethnic Christians," most of whom either join existing Canadian churches or create ethnically specific congregations. In Christianity and Ethnicity in Canada, eleven scholars explore the complex relationships between religious and ethnic identity within the nine major Christian traditions in Canada. The contributors discuss the ways in which changes in the ethnic composition of these traditions influence religious practice and identity, as well as how the nine religious traditions influence communal and individual ethnic identities. An introductory chapter by Paul Bramadat and David Seljak provides a thorough discussion of the theoretical, historical, and empirical issues involved in the study of Christianity and ethnicity in Canada. This volume complements Religion and Ethnicity in Canada in which the authors address similar issues within the six major non-Christian communities in Canada, and within Canadian health care, education, and politics

Abstract

Through White Noise is structured around poetry and personal stories about living in liminal space that requires and encourages cultural sensitivity, awareness, and commitment for a just society. A prominent theme in this book is the challenge of reconciling the ideal of Canadian multiculturalism with experiences of marginalization and stereotyping. Before her arrival, Khalida imagined her new homeland as a multicultural rainbow arched over a diversity of races, beliefs and practices. Entering Winnipeg in the middle of winter, she was greeted with a white world: white people, white, snow-covered ground, white trees and a pale blue sky. Jon is a Caucasian professor from England who has a privileged position as an academic citizen. He felt responsible for enhancing his students? awareness of their perceptions, and the role they have in their teaching practices. Reena is a South Asian professor living in Quebec whose voice is combined with other educators as they address different racisms. The book inspires readers to embrace teaching and learning relationships that respect the dynamic spaces we live in locally and globally.
