Vier Monumente von Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) werden hinsichtlich Auftragslage, Genese und Rezeption anhand von bisher unbeachtetem Quellenmaterial dargestellt. Das Grabmonument für Marschall Moritz von Sachsen in Strassburg verzichtet auf traditionelle Symbole ewigen Lebens und feiert stattdessen den stolzen Soldatenführer. Die allegorische Sockelfigur des glücklichen Bürgers am Königsdenkmal in Reims ist ein Selbstporträt des Künstlers. Auf zeitgenössische Allegoriekritik antwortend, macht Pigalle damit den citoyen zu einer ungewöhnlichen künstlerischen Programmfigur. Radikaler noch setzt er seine Idee von künstlerischer Genialität in der skandalträchtigen Statue des greisen, nackten Voltaire (im Pariser Louvre) um. Das Pariser Grabmal für Comte d'Harcourt zeigt sodann paradigmatisch die schleichende Auflösung der konventionellen christlichen Inhalte und ihrer Ikonografie, die durch säkularisierte, von der Aufklärung geprägte Ideen ersetzt werden. Dieser künstlerische Transformationsprozess charakterisiert Pigalles Œuvre.

This book traces the evolution of the concept of monumentality, from straightforward historical inscription to periods when such manifestations become ideologically suspect. Were Greek statues really white? Why keep monuments or Indian toponyms in the United States? Nineteenth-century British and American artists explore the construction of identity, history and nation. Gradually, monuments became landmarks of mutability as much as stability. From books and poems to works of art, twentieth and twenty-first century aesthetics revisit the monumental, from Finley's garden to Richard Serra's labyrinthine iron structures. It was the camera and the circumstances of the Second World War that first brought together Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Bill Brandt (1904-1983). During the Blitz, both artists produced images depicting civilians sheltering in the London Underground. These "shelter pictures" were circulated to millions via popular magazines and today rank as iconic works of their time.
