Abstract

A continuation of "The Illustrated Flora of Illinois" series, this volume features Illinois flowering plants. This series is designed to provide a working reference for the identification and classification of all the plant forms found in the state. This series is the first of its kind, as no other study of this sort has been undertaken in any other state, and as such, is an unparalleled contribution to its field. In his introduction to this volume, Mr. Mohlenbrock discusses some of the terms and procedures used in the identification and classification of the plants. He outlines

Abstract

For many years orchids have been among the most popular of ornamental plants, with thousands of species and hybrids cultivated worldwide for the diversity, beauty, and intricacy of their flowers. This book is the eagerly-awaited result of over 30 years of research into orchid anatomy by one of the world's leading authorities and is the first comprehensive publication on orchid anatomy since 1930. It describes the structure and relationships among the cells and tissues of leaves, stems, and roots, and is organized systematically in line with the taxonomy expressed in the OUP Genera Orchidacearum

Abstract

Tracing the evolution of one of the most ancient major branches of flowering plants, this is a wide-ranging survey of state-of-the-art research on the early clades of the monocot phylogenetic tree. It explores a series of broad but linked themes, providing for the first time a detailed and coherent view of the taxa of the early monocot lineages, how they diversified and their importance in monocots as a whole. Featuring contributions from leaders in the field, the chapters trace the evolution of the monocots from largely aquatic ancestors. Topics covered include the rapidly advancing field of monocot fossils, aquatic adaptations in pollen and anther structure and pollination strategies and floral developmental morphology. The book also presents a new plastid sequence analysis of early monocots and a review of monocot phylogeny as a whole, placing in an evolutionary context a plant group of major ecological, economic and horticultural importance.

Abstract

Tropical crops : Monocotyledons presents the basic information on the botany and agronomy of tropical monocotyledonous crops, which are either used locally or are partly or wholly exported. The space given to each crop is dependent upon its importance and the amount of work which has been devoted to it. There is coverage even of those crops grown on a small scale and some which occur wild. The arrangement of the book is by plant families, which with their genera and species are given in alphabetical order. The information on each crop is given under the headings : common names, chromosome numbers, uses, systematics, origin and distribution, cultivars, ecology, structure, pollination, germination, chemical composition, propagation, husbandry, major diseases and pests, improvement and breeding, and production and trade. A twenty-page general glossary of botanical terms is included. This soft-cover edition is an unabridged combination, with corrections, of the two volumes of Tropical crops : Monocotyledons which were first published in 1972 and which have received wide critical acclaim.

Abstract

Volumes III and IV of this encyclopaedia provide a novel classification of the monocotyledons, a group encompassing plants of most diverse life-forms such as aquatics, terrestrial and epiphytic herbs, and tall trees. Of the 106 families now recognized 104 are treated in the two volumes, while the economically or horticulturally important grass and orchid families are relegated to two subsequent volumes. The classification followed here is based on recent molecular studies as well as on the vast body of information available on this plant group. The wealth and precision of information, but also the keys for the identification of genera and details on their properties, including distribution and diversification, make this work an important source for both the scholar and the practitioner in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences..
