The aim of this publication is to discuss the revolutions phenomenon and its multi-faceted development on a large geographic scale and a long-term perspective. The 25 essays included concern studies from territorial legislation and administration studies to political debates; from conspiracy strategies to economic, cultural, social, religious, communicational and artistic matters. Such papers are to be considered an effort to synthetize the most recent historiographic perspectives, result of wide and inclusive academic discussions about the great turmoil of 1789-1849. The purpose is to provide new contributions to the current international debate on the revolutionary and counterrevolutionary movements of that period. Il volume si propone di tematizzare il fenomeno rivoluzionario su una vasta scala geografica, in una prospettiva di lunga durata e nella sua pluralità di sviluppi. Il ventaglio degli oggetti di studio dei venticinque saggi raccolti va dalla legislazione e amministrazione territoriale alle discussioni politiche, dalle strategie cospirative alle questioni di carattere economico, culturale, sociale, religioso, comunicativo e artistico. Die französisch-eidgenössischen Beziehungen der Frühen Neuzeit waren von extremer Ungleichheit der Akteure geprägt. Auf der einen Seite stand ein föderatives Netzwerk kleiner Republiken, auf der andern Seite eine monarchisch verfasste, vergleichsweise zentralisierte europäische Großmacht. Die Studie rückt die politische Semantik, die Bedeutung personaler Netzwerke sowie die Praktiken und Kanäle des Verhandelns in diesen asymmetrischen Beziehungen in den Blick. Anhand ausgewählter Interaktionssituationen wird gezeigt, wie die Vertreter der französischen Krone und die eidgenössischen Obrigkeiten die politischen Beziehungen der Gemeinwesen im Spannungsfeld von Souveränität, Protektion und Patronage verorteten. Gesandte und Ratsmitglieder, aber auch Solddienstoffiziere, Abenteurer und lokale Klienten übernahmen wichtige Rollen in Verhandlungen und beeinflussten deren Ausgang durch ihre partikularen Interessen. In den spezifischen Herausforderungen, die sich für die französischen Gesandten in der Eidgenossenschaft ergaben, zeigen sich allgemeine Merkmale des Verhandelns mit Republiken in der Frühen Neuzeit.
