The aim of this publication is to discuss the revolutions phenomenon and its multi-faceted development on a large geographic scale and a long-term perspective. The 25 essays included concern studies from territorial legislation and administration studies to political debates; from conspiracy strategies to economic, cultural, social, religious, communicational and artistic matters. Such papers are to be considered an effort to synthetize the most recent historiographic perspectives, result of wide and inclusive academic discussions about the great turmoil of 1789-1849. The purpose is to provide new contributions to the current international debate on the revolutionary and counterrevolutionary movements of that period.

“Long live the Reds, down with the Whites! Long live Ledru-Rollin! Bonaparte to the guillotine! Down with the Chouans!”. These cries made in October 1850 by grape pickers from the Dole area are one of the many traces that Pierre Merlin collected in archives that have been little-studied until now to write the living history of the democratic learning in Jura between 1848 and the end of the 19th century. From the intense political struggles around 1848 to the establishment of the Republic and beyond, the book describes the formation of a democratic opinion that is illuminated by trajectories of emblematic republicans and socialists such as Louis-Étienne Jousserandot and Jean-Paul Mazaroz.

The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.

“Schule der Gesellschaft” Knowledge systems in Zurich educational practices between 1771 and 1834The great social and political revolutions of 1798 and 1831 fueled efforts at radical restructuring of education policy. There were, however, gaps between the new norms and traditional local practices. Official and intellectual setting of new standards clashed with local and regional needs and conceptions of schooling. In a process of gradual adjustment, locally varying mixtures of new prescriptions and traditional approaches emerged.Making use of voluminous source material, consisting principally of answers to school surveys from 1771 and 1779, as well as reports of school authorities from 1834, the study provides a comparative view across several hundred Zurich schools. The author conveys a nuanced portrayal of educational practices at the turn of the 19th century. The results of the study reveal similarities in schooling approaches across the region, and show the societal knowledge system underlying them. Investigating schools requires examining the surrounding society as well.

The European Union is a unique institutional construction in history. Built and enlarged slowly and peacefully, with the aim of reconciling sworn enemies after two terrible wars by means of an economic alliance designed to create a lasting human understanding, it is today much more than a simple free trade area. What about European culture? How does it relate to the continent's economic and political integration projects? Constantly under development, constantly questioned, even contested, European culture is the subject of the studies gathered in this volume.
