"Media, Place and Mobility offers a new understanding of media uses as place-making practices in everyday living. Drawing primarily on phenomenological perspectives, Shaun Moores focuses on the ways in which people inhabit physical and media environments, and he explores the bodily and technologically mediated mobilities that are involved in this activity of dwelling. His discussion includes many specific examples of mobility, from the manipulation of remote-control devices to the movements of walking and driving in the city or of getting around in online social spaces. Written in an accessible style, the book invites its readers to participate in the interdisciplinary adventure of non-media-centric media studies"

This volume provides an original perspective on mobile communication, focusing on the emerging deployment of images in mobile phone usage: photography, video, mobile television, mobile internet, etc. Deeply embedded in our audiovisual culture, images possess the undeniable power to reshape the future of the mobile phone as an “individual mass medium”. In this collection, European researchers in media and communication studies, sociology, anthropology and political science present empirical and conceptual work on a wide range of issues, including cultural change, new forms of sociability on individual and societal levels, tactics and strategies of users and producers, and finally, representations and imaginaries of the mobile phone in other established media. This book is written for researchers and students of sociology, communication studies and cultural studies as well as for practitioners of interactive media and online communication.

The interruption of personal interaction, even the most intimate, by a ringing cell phone has profoundly affected social behaviour. New communication technologies transform culture - but the reverse is also true. Moving Cultures explores the ways in which teenagers have creatively adopted cell phones and blackberries in their social and cultural lives.

"Wireless networks are the fastest growing communications technology in history. Are mobile phones expressions of identity, fashionable gadgets, tools for life - or all of the above? Mobile Communication and Society looks at how the possibility of multimodal communication from anywhere to anywhere at any time affects everyday life at home, at work, and at school, and raises broader concerns about politics and culture both global and local." "Drawing on data gathered from around the world, the authors explore who has access to wireless technology, and why, and analyze the patterns of social differentiation seen in unequal access. They explore the social effects of wireless communication - what it means for family life, for example, when everyone is constantly in touch, or for the idea of an office when workers can work anywhere. Is the technological ability to multitask further compressing time in our already hurried existence?" "The authors consider the rise of a mobile youth culture based on peer-to-peer networks, with its own language of texting, and its own values. They examine the phenomenon of flash mobs, and the possible political implications. And they look at the relationship between communication and development and the possibility that developing countries could "leapfrog" directly to wireless and satellite technology. This sweeping book - moving easily in its analysis from the United States to China, from Europe to Latin America and Africa - answers the key questions about our transformation into a mobile network society."--Jacket.

Mobile Communications: Renegotiation of the Social Sphere surveys some of the broader issues associated with the adoption and use of mobile communication, and explores developing areas of inquiry. Mobile communications are looked at in the context of other types of mediated interaction (e-mail, instant messaging, Wi-Fi, landline telephone etc.), thus demonstrating the uniqueness of this form of communication and how it is influencing the renegotiation of the social sphere. A truly international set of contributors consider how mobile communication has impacted on society and reflect on how it is used (and sometimes resented) in various public and private spaces. They provide an in-depth analysis of specific areas which complement our understanding of the phenomena including: • The psychological dimensions of mobile communication (addiction, proclivity to be disturbed by others use of the mobile phone), • The linguistics of mobile communication, and • The understanding of mobile communication’s commercialisation. This book will be a valuable addition to any researcher’s or professional’s reading material in the area of interaction of technology and society, providing the reader with a broad insight and specific knowledge of how mobile communication is reformulating the social sphere.
