"Although overlooked by most narratives of American cinema history, films made for purposes outside of theatrical entertainment dominated twentieth-century motion picture production. This volume adds to the growing study of nontheatrical films by focusing on the ways filmmakers developed and audiences encountered ideas about race, identity, politics, and community outside the borders of theatrical cinema. The contributors to this book examine the place and role of race in educational films, home movies, industry and government films, anthropological films, and church films as well as other forms of nontheatrical filmmaking. From filmic depictions of Native Americans and films by 1920s African American religious leaders to a government educational film about the unequal treatment of Latin American immigrants, these films portrayed--for various purposes and intentions--the lives of those who were mostly excluded from the commercial films being produced in Hollywood. "Rights advocacy has become a prominent facet of South Korea's increasingly transnational motion picture output, especially following the 1998 presidential inauguration of Kim Dae-jung, a former political prisoner and victim of human rights abuses who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000. Today it is not unusual to see a big-budget production about the pursuit of social justice or the protection of civil liberties contending for the top spot at the box office. With that cultural shift has come a diversification of film subjects, which range from undocumented workers' rights to the sexual harassment experienced by women to high-school bullying to the struggles among people with disabilities to gain inclusion within a society that has transformed significantly since winning democratic freedoms three decades ago. -- In 2017, David Pettersen was inducted into the French Order of Academic Palms as a Knight. Prior to his induction, he founded an ongoing scholarly collaboration and exchange program with the Film and Media Studies Program at the Lumière University Lyon 2. As part of that work, he has organized conferences and co-edited two special journal issues of Écrans: Politique des auteurs / Auteur theory : Lectures contemporaines (Fall 2016) and Le cinéma ou la nouvelle expérience de l'art / Cinema or the new experience of art (Fall 2018). -- Pettersen's attention to France's B-movies offers a radically new idea of French cinema, with descriptions of blockbuster action films set in gritty urban spaces, and different, emergent notions about France observed in politically engaged filmmaking as a multicultural state with unequal access across parties to liberté, egalité, and fraternité. -- This book contributes to our offerings on French film, and IUP's strategic plan praises our stance as a leading publisher in this area.
