Het onderwerp van dit werk is agroforestry en de huidige toestand in Minas Gerais, Brazilië. Agroforestry is kort gezegd de combinatie van bomen met een klassiek landbouwgewas of vee op hetzelfde perceel. Monocultuur is een groot probleem in de tropen waardoor landverlies optreedt. Hierdoor moet het Atlantisch regenwoud steeds meer plaats maken voor landbouwgrond en daalt de biodiversiteit drastisch. Agroforestry is een veelbelovende oplossing tegen deze problemen, maar zit momenteel nog in de beginfase. Het probleem met agroforestry ligt hem in de juiste combinatie vinden om economisch en ecologisch rendabel te zijn. Door de combinatie van gewassen, zou de teelt natuurlijker en goedkoper moeten verlopen. Er is minder inbreng nodig waardoor de kosten moeten dalen. Het is al snel duidelijk dat agroforestry ecologisch gezien een ideaal concept is om meer biodiversiteit en natuurlijkere landbouw te voorzien op wereldschaal. Het nadeel van deze techniek is de economische opbrengsten die het genereert, deze liggen in de beginjaren zeer laag waardoor een hoog startkapitaal noodzakelijk is. De arbeidskrachten en kosten liggen hoger waardoor extra winst niet snel van toepassing is. Een juiste combinatie en een goed beheer van de percelen is een must om een rendabel agroforestryperceel te bekomen. Er worden enkele combinaties besproken die veelbelovend zijn maar geen garantie bieden voor een rendabel resultaat. De omgevingsfactoren spelen hierin een grote rol.Naast de literatuurstudie is er ook een empirisch deel aanwezig waar er eigen ondervindingen en activiteiten in terug te vinden zijn, deze werden genomen op een agroforstryplot die in bezit is van Iracambi, een NGO in het Atlantisch regenwoud.

In the Atlantic rainforest, extended along the Brazilian coast form Rio Grande DoSol to Rio Grande Do Norte, there is a huge problem with fragmentation of theforest.People cut trees illegal, under unsustainable conditions. This leads to deforestationworldwide. Some organizations like Iracambi stand up against this and start reforestthe pieces that they can buy. Iracambi is located in the buffer zone of the Serra doBrigadeiro State Park, a conservation area administrated by the State ForestryInstitute and supported by a consultative council, in the mountains of southeasternBrazil. Iracambi engages in managing natural resources, developing sustainablecommunities and researching ecosystems in order to save the forest.To know which trees occurs and grows in the area of Iracambi, inventories startedof many regions like trails and plots. Inventories are collected and listed up here.Furthermore the evolution of a trail in the area is followed up.
