This volume explores ideas of home, belonging and memory in migration through the social realities of leaving and living. It discusses themes and issues such as locating migrant subjectivities and belonging; sociability and wellbeing; the making of a village; bondage and seasonality; dislocation and domestic labour; women and work; gender and religion; Bhojpuri folksongs; folk music; experience; and the city to analyse the social and cultural dynamics of internal migration in India in historical perspectives. Departing from the dominant understanding of migration as an aberration impelled by economic factors, the book focuses on the centrality of migration in the making of society. Qui sont ces hommes, femmes ou enfants ayant traversé des frontières dans les conditions que l'on sait pour demander l'asile à notre pays ? D'où viennent-ils ? Et pourquoi arrivent-ils à La Roche-sur-Yon, dans une petite préfecture de province ? Louisa, Blaise, Aminat, Djavganat, Antoine… Autant de prénoms, autant d'histoires singulières. Mais toujours une énergie, une indomptable volonté de vivre. Dans le cabinet de Brigitte Tregouët, médecin dans un quartier populaire où plus de 500 migrants ont consulté en 15 ans, malgré l'obstacle de la langue et de la différence culturelle, des liens d'une profondeur exceptionnelle se nouent. Au travers du récit de cette rencontre saisissante se disent les tragédies du pays de départ et du chemin de l'exil qui ébranlent la soignante, mais également la chrétienne engagée. L'auteure raconte aussi les embûches ici en France et les échecs, mais évoque la lente intégration par le travail, l'école, le sport… Les liens qui se tissent, la découverte de la culture de l'autre avec toute sa richesse, sa spiritualité, nous emmènent dans un voyage surprenant.
