The a+u May 2020 issue features the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award (EU Mies Award). Its organizer, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, was founded in 1983 during the reconstruction of the Barcelona Pavilion (1929). The EU Mies Award has been held biennially since 1988 and marked its 16th edition in 2019. The issue covers all the shortlisted works and the Jury proceedings of each edition that were curated together with Ivan Blasi, an architect and a coordinator of the award at the Mies Foundation, along with an essay by Angelica Fitz, one of the jury members in 2019. Additionally, the issue features another initiative of Mies Foundation, the Art Intervention at the Barcelona Pavilion. 8 works are highlighted here and supported with an essay by architectural historian, Dietrich Neumann. Finally, through the collection of more than 500 works recorded since the construction of the Pavilion in 1929, we are able to trace the trends and discussions of the “European architecture” that have continued since more than 90 years ago till today.

Is it possible to connect 383 architectural works or 446 architectural studios? This is the challenge of this publication that presents, through images, texts and plans, the set of all the works nominated for the EU Mies Award 2019 that despite sharing a geography (Europe), an objective (quality) and a time (completion from 2017 to 2018), develop very different specificities and attitudes. The conclusions of the jury and the external criticisms that accompany them here, point out and complement the understanding and encourage reflection on what these works say about Europe and its architecture at the present time. The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award, draws every two years a broad and precise panorama of works, studies, clients and territories that share the passion for architecture. Through the dissemination of this catalog that all participants receive as acknowledgement, 84 independent experts, 52 national architectural associations and the 16 institutions that form part of the award Advisory Committee become a reference that unites and fosters exchange between the European architectural community. The publication is at the same time a guide to travel to Europe and an invitation to visit the exhibition of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 and also to the consultation of its archive and the EUMiesAward App.

The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2017 is a catalogue of all the works nominated for the present edition, which provides a panorama of architecture of the past two years in Europe. The Compilation contains the complete set of works nominated for this edition of 2017, without having a single one stand out: the material before being judged. A first volume where drawings, photographs and information is organised into three parts: Uses, Places and People. Three collections that work as a sort of easily readable index. Plan drawings are oriented north, and are ordered according to programme, comparing works in the same programme families. Photographs are ordered according to city and country where they are built. And the index at the end is ordered according to authors. This gives three different ways of finding a work. The Jury Selection contains the 40 works selected by the jury, who decided to emphasise the importance of the urban character of Europe. This volume aspires to reflect the discussions held by the jury, that is why the works are organised according to urban fabric. Exo-urban, Periphery, Consolidated and Historic Centre are the parts that construct the imaginary city, the City of 40, the city we represent in the itinerant exhibition. The reference of this catalogue is the Atlas. European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award 1988-2015, published only half a year ago. The logic and coherence of the categories used here are defined in this work, which analyses and classifies all the works nominated to the Award from 1988-2015. The publication made for the 2015 Award, which brought together the totality of works nominated for that edition, was an exercise of classification for the Atlas. The present catalogue, as a tool to interpret the Award, is one more step in this process that is alive and that works with contemporary material.

Old Europe is beginning to show signs of renewed vitality, to judge from the results of this latest edition of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture: Mies van der Rohe Award 2003. Not only were 269 works selected; not only are the number of competing countries steadily increasing, especially in Eastern Europe; but the standard of the entries, particularly of the winning projects and the 40 runners-up, are arguably the most impressive ever. Of special note is the predominance of projects that address new sites and/or new programs. The winning project encompasses all this and more: Zaha Hadid's tram station in Strasbourg is at once a strategy, something open-ended, playful, imperfect, intelligent, and playful. But it is also resolved and unafraid to identify with conventional architectural qualities. Additionally, this year's jury has singled out Jrgen Mayer as the most promising young designer in Europe for his first work, the Scharnhauser Park town hall. Other works shortlisted by the jury include the Chassa Park Apartments by Xaveer De Geyter Architects, the Palais de Tokyo by Lacaton & Vassal Architects, and Hagen Island by MVRDV. Accompanying photographs and plans of the 41 nominated projects are essays by some of architecture's most important critics.
