Die Sichtbarkeit der globalen »Boykott, Desinvestitionen und Sanktionen«-Kampagne (BDS) gegen Israel nimmt weltweit zu. Unter Berufung auf die universalen Menschenrechte fordern BDS-Akteure einen umfassenden Boykott des jüdischen Staats. Gleichzeitig wird die Bewegung oft als antisemitisch klassifiziert, was zu der Frage führt: Können Antisemitismen auch im Namen der Menschenrechte formuliert werden? The region of the Middle East has been called the cradle of mankind. This volume studies historical, cultural, religious, social and political legacies, which play a central role in obstructing intercultural dialogue in the Middle East. The region became home to numerous cultures, religions and ethnicities with long experience of living together in a multicultural environment and has an immense impact on the entire human civilization as first human civilizations were born there. Today, more than 50% of world population follow Abrahamic religions (e.g. Christianity, Islam, Judaism), which have their roots in the Middle East. Die SED suggerierte über Jahrzehnte hinweg, sie sei ein enges Bündnis mit der Palästinensischen Befreiungsorganisation unter Führung Jassir Arafats eingegangen, das auf gemeinsamen Werten und geteilten politischen Überzeugungen beruhte. Ost-Berlin war demnach ein einflussreicher Partner der PLO, der uneingeschränkt für die legitimen Rechte der Palästinenser und ihren eigenen Staat an der Seite Israels eintrat. Aber was bedeutete dies konkret? Wie substanziell war die PLO- und Palästinapolitik der DDR? Inwiefern griff Ost-Berlin in die Machtkämpfe um den Vorsitz der PLO ein? Von welchen Faktoren wurde die Haltung des SED-Regimes gegenüber Jassir Arafat bestimmt? Wie verhielt sich Honecker, als Syrien – einer der wichtigsten Verbündeten der DDR – immer wieder gegen die Palästinenser im Libanon Krieg führte?
