Abstract

Abstract

Phase transformations in solids typically lead to surprising mechanical behaviour with far reaching technological applications. The mathematical modeling of these transformations in the late 80s initiated a new field of research in applied mathematics, often referred to as mathematical materials science, with deep connections to the calculus of variations and the theory of partial differential equations. This volume gives a brief introduction to the essential physical background, in particular for shape memory alloys and a special class of polymers (nematic elastomers). Then the underlying mathematical concepts are presented with a strong emphasis on the importance of quasiconvex hulls of sets for experiments, analytical approaches, and numerical simulations.

Abstract

This volume deals with the simulation of metamorphic and tectonic microstrucutres in rocks with a special emphasis on the modelling package "Elle". The first part provides a review of the problems and opportunities in the modelling of microstructures, followed by an introduction to various numerical modelling techniques. In the second part examples of the modelling of  different processes which alter rock microstructure are presented, beginning with individual processes and progressing to modelling multiple coupled processes.

Abstract

The contributions to the book concern various aspects of extension of classical continuum models. These extensions are related to the appearance of microstructures both natural as well as these created by processes. To the first class belong various thermodynamic models of multicomponent systems such as porous materials, composites, materials with microscopic heterogeneities. To the second class belong primarily microstructures created by phase transformations. Invited authors cover both fields of thermodynamic modeling and mathematical analysis of such continua with microstructure. In particular the following subjects are covered: thermodynamic modeling of saturated and unsaturated porous and granular media, linear and nonlinear waves in such materials, extensions of constitutive laws by internal variables, higher gradients and nonequilibrium fields, stochastic processes in porous and fractal materials, thermodynamic modeling of composite materials, mathematical analysis of multicomponent systems, phase transformations in solids.
