À l'origine, un intermezzo, ou intermède, est une pièce musicale, instrumentale ou chantée, qu'agrémente parfois danse ou pantomime, donnée pendant les entractes ponctuant le cours de l'œuvre principale. C'est dans un statut résolu d'intermezzi que se livrent les dix textes réunis dans le présent volume. D'abord parce qu'ils se proposent comme un intermédiaire réflexif entre l'œuvre telle qu'en elle-même et l'œuvre vue, exposée. Ensuite parce qu'ils s'attachent à mettre en valeur la poétique de l'entre-deux qui caractérise les travaux ici analysés, à éclairer la dualité qui les traverse (l'art sans qualité et le ± bel art, le réel et l'artifice, l'illusionnisme et l'anti-illusionnisme, la pièce construite et le readymade, l'aura et le souci politique). Au total, les dix artistes étudiés (Franz Ackermann, Sarah Morris, Didier Marcel, Franck Scurti, Hugues Reip, Xavier Veilhan, Mathieu Mercier, Simon Starling, Bojan Šarčevič et Paul Sietsema), pour chacun desquels Michel Gauthier propose des analyses approfondies en leur donnant une indispensable profondeur de champ historique, offrent un réjouissant aperçu de la création actuelle, de sa richesse et de sa complexité.
