“A tremendous resource for both practitioners and researchers in the field to better understand men’s needs and improve their delivery of person-centred care.” - Paul Galdas, Professor of Nursing and Men’s Health, University of York, UK “A very clever book that covers a breadth of important issues in relation to men’s health while also providing critical nuance and depth. A must read for anyone with a genuine interest in moving men’s health forward.” - Steve Robertson, Emeritus Professor of Men, Gender and Health, University of Sheffield, UK “A very important book in the growing field of men’s health. The honesty with which the men open up to describe their day-to-day realities gives an insight that all working within the health and social care sector should read and learn from.” - Alan White, Emeritus Professor of Men’s Health, Leeds Becket University, UK "An engaging and accessible handbook to the many intricacies of men's health that demands a place on the shelves of every clinician and academic with an interest in men's health and wellbeing." - Ally Fogg, writer and co-founder of Men and Boys Coalition This book explores male health psychology in relation to chronic health conditions. Using data from men with rheumatic diseases as a starting point, this book draws on the wider literature to focus on how men talk about different aspects of living with long-term health issues. This includes how men discuss the impact of chronic illness on their sense of control and self-reliance, masculine identity, body image, mental health, sex and intimacy, and for those living with a life-limiting condition how they discuss facing their mortality. It also covers how men self-manage and what influences their help-seeking behaviours. Whilst men are often branded as ‘hard to reach’, the author argues that when given permission and provided with the right environment, men will talk about their health. This book takes the stance men are under-served by health services and includes suggestions for developing support services for health and mental health that meet men’s needs and preferences. Focussing on the experiences and support needs of men with long-term conditions, this is an ideal reading for clinicians, healthcare professionals, and practitioners working with men with long-term conditions, as well as early career researchers and students interested in male psychology, men’s health, and gender and society. Caroline Flurey is a chartered psychologist and Associate Professor of Men’s Health and Long-Term Conditions at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. She is trustee of the Men & Boys Coalition and member of parliament’s task and finish group for men’s health.

This book draws upon qualitative interviews with lower-middle class men with adult children. It provides important insight into a region of the world that has not been sufficiently studied in the field of Masculinity Studies and analyzes manhood/fatherhood from a novel perspective. It uses Margaret Wetherell’s (2012) theory of “affective practice” to focus on moments men experience masculinity as “essence” and “free play” as formulated by Todd W. Reeser (2010). Elaborating on affective practices which stabilize and destabilize makbulhood, manhood, and fatherhood, it focuses on a long-excluded generation of men in the literature and illuminates men’s “Iamnotlikethem” and “Iamlikeallmenontheearth” moments. It is relevant to researchers in gender studies, masculinity studies, social psychology, and family sociology. Mürüvet Esra Yıldırım is an award-winning qualitative researcher, content consultant, and playwright. She has introduced the Guided Autobiography technique in Turkey and commences regular groups to initiate artistic and daily dialogues. .

This book presents an in-depth analysis of young people’s experiences of diverse drinking practices, including heavy drinking and drunkenness, as fun and pleasurable as they navigate gendered leisure spaces. Using qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion, the analysis engages with theories and concepts of culture, gender, and transgression to foreground the roles that socio-cultural and material elements and human agency play in shaping alcohol consumption in contemporary Nigeria. It focuses on the enactment of hyper-heterosexual and alternative masculinities and the reconfigurations of passive and non-passive femininities through drinking practices. It also interrogates how and why multinational alcohol companies are targeting Nigerian women and youths and the extent to which their activities are contributing to changing gendered drinking and sexual practices, which are at odds with the extant local norms that promote abstinence, moderation among adults, and sexual purity among unmarried youths. Importantly, this book moves beyond solely Western theorizing by drawing on both Western and non-Western gender theories to analyze how contemporary Nigerian young men and women ‘do’ masculinity and femininity with alcohol and will be a valuable resource for social scientists, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in youth drinking behaviours, multinational alcohol companies' activities, and decolonizing gender scholarship. Emeka W. Dumbili is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and an Ad Astra Fellow in the School of Sociology, University College Dublin, Ireland. His research focuses on gender and identity, sociology of substance use, leisure studies, youth studies, social theories, and qualitative methodologies. Dr. Dumbili has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on gender, transgression, alcohol, and other psychoactive substance use. .

This handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key theoretical and analytical approaches, topics and debates in contemporary scholarship on African masculinities. Refusing to privilege Western theoretical constructs (but remaining in dialogue with them), contributors explore the contestations around and diversities within men, masculinities and sexualities in Africa; investigate individual and collective practices of masculinity; and interrogate the social construction of masculinities. Bringing together insights from scholars across gender studies, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature and religion, this book demonstrates how recognizing and upholding the integrity of African phenomena, locating and reflecting on men and masculinities in varied African contexts and drawing new theoretical frameworks all combine to take the discourse on men and masculinities in Africa forward. Chapters examine a range of issues within the context of masculinities, including embodiment, sport, violence, militarism, spirituality, gender roles, fatherhood, homosexuality, health and work. This handbook will be valuable reading for scholars, researchers, and policymakers in Gender Studies (particularly Masculinity Studies) and Africana Studies.

"A well researched, thoughtfully argued, and compassionate take on the largest challenges facing young men, and therefore us all. This is a book that couldn't have come at a more critical time." —Chanel Contos, Activist and CEO, Teach Us Consent “The crisis with young men's mental health is real. Equally real is the crisis of how we think about young men. This book takes us from crisis to opportunity, from talking about young men to talking with them. It is centred in care - caring for and about young men, and caring about real solutions rather than throwing up our hands in alarm.” —Gary Barker, CEO, Equimundo Center for Masculinities and Social Justice “This timely book of reviews is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how and where many young men today are forging their masculine identities, seeking to satisfy their relationship needs, and coping with life’s inevitable stresses.” —Dr. Judy Chu, Author of When Boys Become Boys “From Echo Chambers to Evidence” seeks to understand young men’s mental health by going to the places and spaces where they spend their time. It is essential reading for researchers, clinicians, policymakers and members of the general public who care about men’s wellbeing. Each chapter focuses on the contemporary nexus between masculinities and health, encompassing alcohol, gambling, sport, gaming, social media, pornography, and dating apps, to explore how and why these areas are central to young men’s lives and their health. Addressing the present day ‘crisis of masculinity’, this edited volume comprises a series of up-to-date reviews to emphasise strength-based, healthy masculinities in young men’s mental health. It seeks to understand and engage with research, policy, and practice to co-design effective interventions supporting young men, presenting a clear agenda to direct future efforts. This book explores the hidden world of sex clubs. These are not strip clubs, lap dancing clubs, or brothels; these are clubs that men and women visit to have no strings attached sex. Each year sex clubs, traditionally called swingers clubs, are visited by over one million people in the UK. Using social and cultural theory, the author explores the cultures of desire through themes such as erotic hierarchies, atmospheres and power, women and sexual fantasies, men, masculinity and non-consent, hypersexualized black bodies, heterosexuality and queer heteroeroticism and trans desires. From cuckolding to group sex, bareback sex to intergenerational sex, partner swapping and threesomes to BDSM and fetish nights, sex clubs host a diverse range of sexual encounters that are part of a growing trend of recreational sex. Despite there being over 40 clubs in the UK alone, we continue to know very little about who is visiting the club, why they go there and what people do. This book—drawing upon ethnographies, interviews and large-scale quantitative data—is one of the first in the field to systematically collect and critically interrogate sex clubs and their erotic encounters. This will not only be the first sustained social and cultural analysis of sex clubs themselves, but it also aims to lure the reader into the club through discussions of ethnographic encounters, enabling them to experience the unique dynamics of sex clubs and their cultures of desire. Drawing on extensive ethnographic, qualitative and quantitative research, this monograph provides a novel account of masculinities in an individual sport: competitive road cycling. Chapters present varied analyses on male cyclists’ relationship with masculinity, the culture of competitive road cycling, cyclists’ attitudes toward injury management, sexual minority and women’s experiences in the sport, and autoethnographic accounts of the author’s own experiences of being involved in the sport for over ten years. The author also examines how masculinity impacts male cyclists’ attitudes towards competition, risk taking and doping practices. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in sports sociology, gender studies, and masculinity studies. Jack Hardwicke is a Lecturer in Sport and Health Sciences in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology at the University of Northampton. This book explores the potential of men’s veganism to contest unsustainable anthropocentric masculinities. Examining what it means to be a vegan man and connections between men, masculinities and veganism addresses exploitative human-animal relations, climate change, and social inequalities as urgent and interconnected global issues. Using conceptual insights from critical studies on men and masculinities, ecofeminism, critical animal studies and vegan studies, this book examines the potential of men’s veganism and vegan masculinities to foster more ethical, caring and sustainable ways of relating to nonhuman animals and to contribute towards more egalitarian gender relations. This book is grounded in a qualitative empirical study of the lived experiences of 61 vegan men in Northern Europe. The themes explored include men’s transition to veganism, the emotional and embodied dimensions of men’s veganism, negotiating social and intimate relationships as vegan men, and links between men’s veganism, gender equality and social justice.
