The 'Other' Martyrs is a collection of essays that center on a diverse thematic array of women's martyrdom across periods and cultures. Ranging from Russia to Iraq, from Iran to Canada, from Greece to the lands of early, and spanning medieval and modern periods, each essay focuses on how women's sacrifice and martyrdom have been represented to diverse ends. In these, the main discovery is the 'how' of martyrdom and sacrifice, not just the 'what.' Each author unpacks the rhetoric, narrative strategies, and structure of their case to delve with rigor into the nature and function of women's sacrifice, and a wide range of theoretical and philological underpinnings informs the analyses. Readers will gain fresh insights into post-Soviet moments of cultural crises and gender construction through case studies of Pussy Riot and the film Everybody Dies But Me, War propaganda in early to mid-twentieth century Canada, women's oratory skills in early Islamicate culture, the imagery of women and children in Iranian official history, the construction of influential Greek martyrdom, to name some examples. While each essay easily stands alone because of its specific inquiry, the corpus offers a much-needed transnational, transperiod panorama of the many shapes and implications of women's sacrifice as seen in official and non-official discourse. The scholars are all leading authorities in their fields and therefore bring the most up-to-date and rigorous analyses to their inquiries.

The book is concerned with one of the most important issues in Persian culture, that is to say a broadly conceived idea of sacrifice and martyrdom. At present, it is contained in the concept of shahadat, which arouses much controversy in the Western world today. In successive chapters, the author discusses the origin and evolution of this concept in Persian culture, the process of shaping attitudes conducive to the attainment of readiness for shahadat and the role of this concept in the propa...

A focus on crucified saints (like Christ in their death, unlike in its significance) has enabled this volume?s contributors to explore varied aspects of martyrdom, the ascription of sanctity, purification from sins, and the significance of multiple forms of crucifixion ? both literal and metaphorical ? from early Christianity to the present day, including examinations of the role of crucifixion in Islamic and secular settings, in its representation in sacred and non-Christian fiction, and in art.0Together these papers explore how the centrality of the cruci?x that we sometimes take for granted took longer in affirming itself and how cruci?ed saints played a signi?cant role in mediating and establishing the rationale for this presence and guiding the understanding of the process of redemption.

Warriors, Martyrs, and Dervishes: Moving Frontiers, Shifting Identities in the Land of Rome (13th-15th Centuries) focuses on the perceptions of geopolitical and cultural change, which was triggered by the arrival of Turkish Muslim groups into the territories of the Byzantine Empire at the end of the eleventh century, through intersecting stories transmitted in Turkish Muslim warrior epics and dervish vitas, and late Byzantine martyria. It examines the Byzantines’ encounters with the newcomers in a shared story-world, here called “land of Rome,” as well as its perception, changing geopolitical and cultural frontiers, and in relation to these changes, the shifts in identity of the people inhabiting this space. The study highlights the complex relationship between the character of specific places and the cultural identities of the people who inhabited them.
