One can argue that academia has always existed in an information age; however, as the general public gains access to ever more advanced systems, it can be claimed that areas of academia require updating to maintain vitality in today's world. When nautical archaeology produces inspiring reports, they are often at the hand of large budgets, rather than general day-to-day dissemination. This book proposes using state-of-the-art, low-budget digital technology from the outset of surveys, so that data may be recorded, analysed and disseminated, with seamless efficiency and great flair, while employi

"At the end of the last Ice Age, sea-level around the world was lower, coastal lands stretched further and the continents were bigger, in some cases landmasses were joined by dry land that has now disappeared beneath the waves. The study of the now submerged landscapes that our ancestors knew represents one of the last barriers for archaeology. Only recently have advances in underwater technology reached the stage where a wealth of procedures is available to explore this lost undersea world. This volume considers the processes behind the rising (and falling) of relative sea-levels and then presents the main techniques available for the study and interpretation of the archaeological remains that have survived inundation. Case studies are used to illustrate particular applications. Finally, a review of projects around the world highlights the varying scale and period of sites concerned"--

Questions about the cultural exchange of both knowledge and material goods are just as topical today as in years gone by. These questions have gained increasing attention from scholars since the 1980s when the term 'transfers cultures' by historians arose. However, this book provides a completely new approach in this context by interdisciplinary investigation of cultural exchanges based on chosen objects from shipwrecks and land, significant written documents and verifiable transfer of knowledge. The publication combines studies from humanities and natural sciences. Thus, historians, archaeologists, and pharmacists have investigated the way of transfer by means of material and immaterial goods, such as ship lists, medicine, metal ware, exotic animals and Asian objects as well as ship constructions. They set out, the continuity and discontinuity of cultural exchange based on moving objects depending on different conditions such as region, time, demand and availability. The innovative contributions of the publication aim to improve the understanding of cultural exchange by sea, as well as its reflection on land in the Early Modern Time and are the results of a workshop, which took place in the German Maritime Museum Bremerhaven, a Research Institute of the Leibniz Association, in 2015.

Traffici commerciali e approdi portuali nella Sardegna meridionale is a study of trade flows on the southern coast of Sardinia in Late Antiquity through underwater finds, amphorae analysis and hypothetical docking points. Underwater surveys along the southern coasts in recent years have allowed us to expand the information registry and have highlighted multiple examples of possible cargoes from wrecks, especially of heterogeneous types, as in Cagliari, Nora (Pula) and in the sea around Sulcis. In particular, the port of Cagliari featured on routes for goods transport and perhaps transhipment. The materials and contexts included in this work originated from throughout the Mediterranean area (South Italy-Sicily, Gaul, Baetica, Lusitania, North Africa, East Mediterranean). A further aspect of the volume concerns the analysis of the underwater archaeological contexts of amphora finds, with the aim of understanding the degree of exploitation of each coastal area and identifying hypothetical docking points, through an underwater, historiographic geomorphological approach. The study aims to increase knowledge of the role of southern Sardinia in Mediterranean trade. Through its central place in the Western Mediterranean the island has played a strategic role in shipping routes and goods exchanges and its resources undoubtedly influenced, directly and indirectly, the involvement of southern Sardinia in ancient marine traffic and commercial exchanges.
