Le carnaval de Binche (cité médiévale à proximité de la frontière française et des villes de Mons, Valenciennes et Maubeuge) est une tradition qui prend ses racines dans un passé lointain. Depuis près d’un siècle, il a connu une renaissance exceptionnelle à laquelle participent toute la population et des dizaines de milliers de personnes extérieures. Tout au long de l’année, dans la vingtaine de sociétés locales, les habitants préparent leur carnaval en créant les costumes, répétant les morceaux de musique et en s’initiant aux rites de cette manifestation qui est devenue un véritable symbole de l’identité locale. Plusieurs semaines avant le Mardi gras – jour du défilé de l’ensemble des participants en costumes et en musique –, des sorties ont lieu, sorte de répétitions générales auxquelles sont associés également les enfants et les femmes. Les gilles de Binche sont les héros de ce carnaval. Ils impressionnent par leur costume, leurs sabots avec lesquels ils frappent les pavés des rues et leur extraordinaire chapeau à plumes d’autruche qui leur donnent cet aspect d’homme-oiseau. Jamais les gilles de Binche ne se produisent en-dehors de leur ville. Avec de nombreux documents anciens et de belles photographies actuelles, Michel Révelard, observateur privilégié, lui-même gille occasionnel, nous raconte la genèse et l’exceptionnelle vivacité de cette tradition, carnaval unique en Europe, qui anime les rues de la vieille cité de Binche à la sortie de l’hiver.
