Abstract

“Thematic Cartography for the Society” is prepared on the basis of the best 30 papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Cartography and GIS held in Albena, Bulgaria in 2014. The aim of the conference is to register new knowledge and shape experiences about the latest achievements in cartography and GIS worldwide. At the same time, the focus is on the important European region - the Balkan Peninsula. The following topics are covered:User-friendly Internet and Web Cartography; User-oriented Map Design and Production; Context-oriented Cartographic Visualization; Map Interfaces for Volunteered Geographic Information; Sensing Technologies and their Integration with Maps; Cartography in Education. focus on user-oriented cartographic approaches.

Abstract

The Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) was established in early 1998 to promote academic teaching and research on GIS at the European level. Since then, the annual AGILE conference has gradually become the leading GIScience conference in Europe and provides a multidisciplinary forum for scientific knowledge production and dissemination. GIScience addresses the understanding and automatic processing of geospatial information in its full breadth. While geo-objects can be represented either as vector data or in raster formats these representations have also guided the research in different disciplines, with GIS researchers concentrating on vector data while research in photogrammetry and computer vision focused on (geospatial) raster data. Although there have - ways been small but fine sessions addressing photogrammetry and image analysis at past AGILE conferences, these topics typically played only a minor role. Thus to broaden the domain of topics the AGILE 2009 conference it is jointly organized with a Workshop of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), dedicated to High Resolution Satellite Imagery, organized by Prof. Christian Heipke of the Le- niz Universität Hannover. This collocation provides opportunities to explore commonalities - tween research communities and to ease exchange between participants to develop or deepen mutual understanding. We hope that this approach enables researchers from the different communities to identify common interests and research methods and thus provides a basis for possible future cooperations.

Abstract

Around the World in 80 Ways offers a (sometimes opinionated) discussion of 80 data-driven maps of our planet. Taken together, the maps tell a story about the physical world; about the impact our species is having on the world; and about how people live in the world – or at least how we lived immediately before the emergence of Covid-19. The maps lie. All maps lie. But the origins of the deceptions are explained, the data sources are signposted and referenced, and the readers are shown how to create their own maps using freely available software. The reader is thus armed with the tools needed to explore local, national or world data – on topics ranging from science to society; environment to entertainment; wealth to wellbeing – a valuable skill in an age when certain politicians are happy to refer to “alternative facts” and media outlets deliver data visualizations that sometimes mislead as much as inform.
