"Under what conditions does climate change potentially lead to negative security outcomes? In brief, this book argues that climate change is most likely to trigger conflict and humanitarian emergencies in countries that have (1) weak state capacity, (2) exclusive political institutions, and (3) when international assistance is blocked or delivered unevenly. Where state capacity reflects a government's ability to prepare for climate shocks and help people in times of need, inclusive political institutions capture their willingness to help all or merely some of their citizens. International assistance can partially compensate for weak state capacity. Countries that have stronger state capacity, more political inclusion, and which can tap international assistance to help them are less likely to experience violence or humanitarian emergencies. The book uses paired cases of countries (Somalia and Ethiopia, Syria and Lebanon, and Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India) that experienced similar environmental exposure but different security outcomes to understand why climate hazards lead to negative security outcomes in some situations but not others"--

This book shows how Chinese officials have responded to popular and international pressure, while at the same time seeking to preserve their own careers, in the context of disaster management. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, it illustrates how authoritarian regimes are creating new governance mechanisms in response to the changing global environment and what challenges they are confronted with in the process. The book examines both the immediate and long-term effects of a major disaster on China’s policy, institutions, and governing practices, and seeks to explain which factors lead to hasty and poorly conceived reconstruction efforts, which in turn reproduce the very same conditions of vulnerability or expose communities to new risks. In short, it tells a “political” story of how intra-governmental interactions, state-society relations, and international engagement can shape the processes and outcomes of recovery and reconstruction.

This book utilizes an innovative approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the correlations between monetary policy, economic growth, inflation and asset price volatility, explores the creation of financial risk prevention systems, and reaches conclusions with both theoretical and practical value. The book offers an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of monetary policy, specifies the correlations between monetary policy, economic growth and inflation, and provides a theoretical basis for and empirical demonstration of monetary policy implementation in China. Previous research in China has primarily focused on the correlation between monetary policy and a specific asset price, while this book comprehensively addresses the appropriateness of real estate, stock, bond and futures price regulation through monetary policies, lending it a high degree of practical significance. In order to arrive at a systemic risk prevention and regulation mechanism for China, the book uses the GARCH mean value model and MGARCH-BEKK model to create a pressure index and provide a three-level pre-warning system for currency crises, bank crises and asset bubble crises. The book systemically introduces the idea of macro-prudential regulation into the Chinese financial system by first clarifying the necessity of implementing macro-prudential regulation in China and then proving its effectiveness in mitigating pro-cyclicality and enhancing steady economic growth by constructing a mitigation model.
