Abstract

This volume is a collection of research articles on the subject of the solar corona, and particularly, coronal magnetism. The book was motivated by the Workshop on Coronal Magnetism: Connecting Models to Data and the Corona to the Earth, which was held 21 - 23 May 2012 in Boulder, Colorado, USA. This workshop was attended by approximately 60 researchers. Articles from this meeting are contained in this topical issue, but the topical issue also contains contributions from researchers not present at the workshop. This volume is aimed at researchers and graduate students active in solar physics. Originally published in Solar Physics, Vol. 288, Issue 2, 2013 and Vol. 289, Issue 8, 2014.

Abstract

This book describes the tools, developed by the author, for perturbing endogenous mechano-sensitive ion channels for magneto-mechanical neuro-modulation. He explores the ways in which these tools compare against existing ones such as electricity, chemicals, optogenetics, and techniques like thermos/magneto-genetics. The author also reports on two platforms—magnetic ratcheting and magnetic microfluidics for directed evolution and high throughput culture of magnetotactic bacteria—that produce high quality magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications like neural stimulations. This thesis was submitted to and approved by the University of California, Los Angeles. Introduces technology for non-invasive control of neural activities that offer deep tissue penetration and controllable dosage; Examines the effects of biomechanical forces on cellular functions; Explores how to improve the reproducibility and uptake of magnetic tools for non-invasive neural modulation.

Abstract

This book deals with compasses for consumer applications realized in MEMS technology, to support location-based and orientation-based services in addition to ‘traditional’ functionalities based on navigation. Navigation is becoming a must-have feature in portable devices and the presence of a compass also makes location-based augmented reality emerge, where a street map or a camera image could be overlaid with highly detailed information about what is in front of the user. To make these features possible both industries and scientific research focus on three axis magnetometers. The author describes a full path from specifications (driven by customers’ needs/desires) to prototype and preparing the way to industrialization and commercialization. The presentation includes an overview of all the major steps of this research and development process, highlighting critical points and potential pitfalls, as well as how to forecast or mitigate them. Coverage includes system design, specifications fulfillment, design strategy and project development methodology, in addition to traditional topics such as microelectronics design, sensor design, development of an experimental setup and characterization. The author uses a practical approach, including pragmatic guidelines and design choices, while maintaining focus on the final target, prototyping in the direction of industrialization and mass production.

Abstract

This book gathers, for the first time, an overview of nearly all of the magnetic sensors that exist today. The book is offering the readers a thorough and comprehensive knowledge from basics to state-of-the-art and is therefore suitable for both beginners and experts. From the more common and popular AMR magnetometers and up to the recently developed NV center magnetometers, each chapter is describing a specific type of sensor and providing all the information that is necessary to understand the magnetometer behavior including theoretical background, noise model, materials, electronics, design and fabrication techniques, etc.

Abstract

This book provides a unified theory of nonlinear electro-magnetomechanical interactions of soft materials capable of large elastic deformations. The authors include an overview of the basic principles of the classical theory of electromagnetism from the fundamental notions of point charges and magnetic dipoles through to distributions of charge and current in a non-deformable continuum, time-dependent electromagnetic fields and Maxwell’s equations. They summarize the basic ingredients of continuum mechanics that are required to account for the deformability of material and present nonlinear constitutive frameworks for electroelastic and magnetoelastic interactions in a highly deformable material. The equations contained in the book are used to formulate and solve a variety of representative boundary-value problems for both nonlinear electroelasticity and magnetoelasticity.

Abstract

This book presents the integrated use of magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar geophysical mapping to understand the human presence within buried archaeological landscapes. Ground-penetrating radar can be used to identify buried living surfaces, geological stratigraphy and the architectural remains of sites in three-dimensions.  Magnetometry can produce images denoting differences on the composition of those materials, both anthropogenic and natural, but with more limited three-dimensional resolution. The integration of the two has a unique ability to resolve and interpret these buried materials, differentiated between the human-caused and natural layers, and place all buried features within historic landscapes.  The final product of geophysical integration, along with some limited subsurface testing, produces a holistic analysis of human adaptations to, and modifications of, the ancient landscape. Examples are shown from sites in Roman Croatia and Britain, Medieval Ireland, Colonial Connecticut, and an Archaic site in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  These examples from very different environments, time periods and cultural groups illustrate how the integrated geophysical methodology can interpret, on a scale approaching many hectares, the ancient landscapes within which people lived.

Abstract

This book describes the application of non-destructive geophysical methods in subsurface archaeological features. Such non-destructive methods are magnetometry, electrical resistance, electromagnetic conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and ground penetrating radar. This book also includes the last improvements in instrumentations, data processing, and interpretations of the collected data sets leading to the rapid progress in geophysical applications in the field of archaeological investigations. The book also provides complete case-studies and archaeological interpretation obtained our results carried out in different localities around the world.

Abstract

"Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides a time-accurate view into human brain function. The concerted action of neurons generates minute magnetic fields that can be detected---totally noninvasively---by sensitive multichannel magnetometers. The obtained millisecond accuracycomplements information obtained by other modern brain-imaging tools. Accurate timing is quintessential in normal brain function, often distorted in brain disorders. The noninvasiveness and time-sensitivityof MEG are great assets to developmental studies, as well. This multiauthored book covers an ambitiously wide range of MEG research from introductory to advanced level, from sensors to signals, and from focal sources to the dynamics of cortical networks. Written by active practioners of this multidisciplinary field, the book contains tutorials for newcomers and chapters of new challenging methods and emerging technologies to advanced MEG users. The reader will obtain a firm grasp of the possibilities of MEG in the study of audition, vision, somatosensation, sensorimotor integration, pain, and cognitive functions both in healthy subjects and several neurological and psychiatric disorders. Development is covered from fetal and pediatric studies to the effects of aging. This volume brings fresh and welcome diversity to the existing MEG literature." MEG book review by Riitta Hari, Academician of Science, Aalto University.
