Märkli's 'Visitor Centre', unmistakeable thanks to Jenny Holzer's large contribution, is the second building to be finished in the Campus. The project embraces contemporary forms while exposing the inherent qualities of materials, such as yew and olive wood, aluminium and marble which have been utilized. Here a thorough survey of the building is provided through sketches, plans, photographs and text.

Since the early 1980s, Peter Märkli has been one of the most striking protagonists of Ger-man Swiss architecture from the earliest period of its emergence. However his impressive buildings cannot be easily classified in the scheme of this architectural movement, since the individual buildings are intensely developed individuals that follow the continuous movement of seeking. They always open up connections with the history of architecture in an inde-pendent, powerful way and express the impetus of timeless validity. This volume presents 17 buildings in detail from the last 15 years with texts, plans and imag-es. The remarkable presentation of works is complemented by enlightening essays by Florian Beigel & Philip Christou, Franz Wanner and Ellis Woodman. An exciting interview with Peter Märkli by Elena Markus and individual statements by the architects round off the im-pressive collection. With an enclosed booklet containing the essays in German.

Contemporary architecture in much of Europe can be said to reflect the commercial exigencies of our times. Globalization, market forces and the standardized products of the building industry increasingly shape the environments that surround us. The work of the Swiss architect Peter Märkli in many respects resists all that. It stands apart - constructs a temporal pause. Greek antiquity, the Romanesque and the farmhouses of the Po delta are all, because of their elementary character, sources of inspirations and, like them, Märkli's architecture approximates an ideality that it never seeks to achieve. Peter Märkli has an exceptional presence in an architectural culture that has produced some of the world's most unconventional buildings of the last decade. In Switzerland he is an architect : this book is the first to document and analyse his work for an international audience.
