Abstract

Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimal access surgery, has revolutionized the field of surgery over the past few years. It has gained worldwide popularity and acceptance by surgeons and patients alike. Minimal scarring, less pain, and shorter hospital stay are the main reasons behind the global appeal of this novel technique. There has been a tremendous improvement in the technique, as well as in the instruments. The technique has passed through the stages of simple laparoscopic surgery to advanced levels, where more complicated procedures are being successfully attempted. The recent introduction of robotic surgery is also gaining popularity, in additional to single port laparoscopic surgery (SILS), which can be scarless surgery. Most of the surgical procedures, which were considered contraindication for the laparoscopic approach, have eventually become the most common and acceptable indications today. This book is intended to provide an overview of the most common procedures performed laparoscopically, as well as some recent advancements in the field.

Abstract

Over the last decades an enormous amount of technical advances was achieved in the field of laparoscopy. Many surgeons with surgical, urological, or gynaecological background have contributed to the improvement of this surgical approach which today has an important and fixed place in the daily routine. It is therefore comprehensible to compose a book entitled laparoscopy serving as a reference book for all three disciplines. Experts of each field have written informative chapters which give practical information about certain procedures, indication of surgery, complications and postoperative outcome. Wherever necessary, the appropriate chapter is illustrated by drawings or photographs. This book is advisable for both beginner and advanced surgeon and should find its place in the libraries of all specialties - surgery, urology, and gynecology.

Abstract

Laparoscopic surgery developed as the most element change ever in the history of surgery. The approach of this method is no more a late headway. The history goes back three decades now when appendectomy was initially performed laparoscopically in 1983. It was then polished by not very many specialists, and there was a moderate move of the method from traditional open surgery to laparoscopic surgery. Hesitance to take in an absolutely new method, absence of facilities, and appropriate training were main considerations ruining its direction. After an underlying hindered period came a sudden ascent in the worldwide preoccupation of the consideration toward this novel strategy. There was an aggregate move from open to laparoscopic surgery in a large portion of the focuses with an expanding rundown of operations being performed laparoscopically. This book is intended to bring forward the very many advancements in the field of laparoscopic surgery. There are many valuable contributions from eminent laparoscopic surgeons ranging from diagnostic to therapeutic procedures performed by this technique. I hope it will benefit the trainee surgeons as well as the experienced alike. Suggestions and positive criticism are more than welcome.

Abstract

Approximately 100 years ago, after the first diagnostic laparoscopy and subsequent developments, the adventure began with laparoscopic appendectomy and cholecystectomy and reached a point where any surgical procedure could be performed easily. Today, many endoscopic surgical procedures have an important role not only in general surgery, but also in the daily practice of many surgical branches. This vertiginous development and change of speed make rapid replacement of the visual and printed materials necessary for training in this area. This book is prepared by surgeons who are very successful in their field.

Abstract

"Increasingly used as an adjunctive tool in the diagnosis and management of ear disease, middle ear endoscopy has the potential to decrease patient morbidity, prevent disease recurrence, and reduce costs. Its capacity to uncover hidden anatomy within the small dimensions of the ear has made it essential for functional surgery, allowing surgeons to preserve key anatomic structures such as the cochlea and facial nerve. Now for the first time, the physicians who pioneered this groundbreaking minimally invasive technique review its indications, advantages, disadvantages, and surgical approaches. Written by the foremost leaders in the field, all members of the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery. Features nearly 1,000 intraoperative endoscopic images filmed with high-definition cameras, plus outstanding line drawings that aid in understanding all concepts. Comprehensively covers the field, including chapters on endoscopic and combined endoscopic-microscopic management of cholesteatoma, surgical restoration of middle ear ventilation, myringoplasty, Meniere disease, tympanoplasty and stapes surgery, revision surgery, and much more. Demonstrates state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures in 19 instructive videos. From the unique anatomy and pathophysiology of the middle ear through diagnosis, surgical indications, procedures, and instrumentation, this book is indispensable for all otolaryngologists and neurotologists. It offers a full picture of the field today, as well as exploring the future possibilities of ear endoscopes alone or in combination with operative microscopes for the most effective treatment of middle ear pathologies"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

In 2016 the first edition of the SAGES Manual Operating through the Endoscope was published. At the time, this represented a review of cutting-edge new technologies that were being introduced within the field of flexible endoscopy. Largely based on applications and data up to 2013, this served as a unique resource for clinicians and researchers to learn about this expanding field. Since then, there has been a significant expansion of new technologies and procedures within this discipline that have meaningfully changed this entire sub-specialty. In addition, large numbers of high-quality data have emerged that support more heartily the safety and efficacy of these techniques. Major international societies now routinely include hands-on training and scientific content of this field in meetings and educational efforts, and many trainees and practitioners are looking for resources to improve their knowledge and technical skills sets. This text is designed to present a comprehensive and state-of the-art approach to the diverse applications of surgical techniques and procedures through the endoscopic platform. Written by experts and emerging specialists in that field, each of these sections addresses patient selection, pre-operative considerations, technical conduct of the most common operations, and avoiding complications. A review of the existing literature addressing the particular topic follow in each section. Extensive endoscopic images and illustrations will make this an interactive text. In addition to updates on most topics in the previous manual, this edition includes exciting new fields of advanced imaging, artificial intelligence and augmented imaging, applications of robotics to endoscopy, and more robust exposure of endoscopic applications for treatment of obesity, a worldwide epidemic. The subject of surgical endoscopy has changed meaningfully since publication of the first edition; now a substantial focus of major journals, scientific meetings, and online platforms. A timely update can capture this broad subject in an accessible manual focused on technologies and data supporting these interventions.
