Abstract

Human Gut Microbiota in Health and Disease: From Pathogenesis to Therapy is a comprehensive discussion of all the aspects associated with gut microbiota early colonization, its development and maintenance, and its symbiotic relationship with the host to promote health. Chapters illustrate the complex mechanisms and metabolic signalling pathways related to how the gut microbiota maintain proper regulation of glucose, lipid and energy homeostasis and immune response, while mediating inflammatory processes involved in the etiology of many chronic disease conditions. Details are provided on the primary etiological factors of chronic disease, the effects of gut dysbiosis and its associated disease conditions, while providing an overview of therapeutic strategies involving dietary fiber and prebiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation therapy and probiotics. Throughout the chapters, a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed animal and human studies is provided as evidence related to the history of human exposure, safety, tolerance, toxicity, nomenclature, and clinical efficacy of utilizing prebiotic fructans, s, as well as probiotic intervention, and dietary modification in the prevention and intervention of chronic disease conditions. With common use today of pharmaceutical medicine in treating symptoms, and frequent overuse of antibiotics in chronic disease within mainstream medical practice, understanding the etiological mechanisms of dysbiosis-induced chronic disease, and natural approaches that offer prevention and potential cures for these diseases is of vital importance to overall human health. -- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Chikungunya and Zika viruses provides the primary "go-to" source for both historical and current information on these increasingly important human pathogens. Both viruses are newly emerged pathogens that have recently become established in greatly expanded global ranges, to threaten hitherto unexposed populations. Epidemics since 2004 have spread from Africa and Asia to Europe and have caused millions of cases in the Americas. The viruses have probably established themselves in South and Central America permanently leaving millions at risk for future infection. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes severe crippling arthritis and symptoms that can last for months or years. Infections with Zika virus (ZIKV) have been associated with potentially fatal neurological symptoms notably to children of women infected during pregnancy. There are no approved vaccines or specific treatments available. Chikungunya and Zika viruses contributes significantly to our understanding of these pathogens. This dedicated monograph brings this combined knowledge together to provide a single up-to-date source of information.--

Abstract

Intercultural Therapy: Challenges, Insights and Developments examines the impact of the work of the Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre in North London, which focused on providing free, psychodynamic therapy. Set up by Jafar Kareem, the centre was the first psychotherapy service with the specific task of offering psychodynamic psychotherapy to Britain's Black and ethnic minority population. The editors of this book have invited a number of Nafsiyat therapists and colleagues to give their view on what has changed, or not changed, in regard to the integration of intercultural issues into mainstream therapy. Intercultural Therapy will be of interest to all psychotherapists working in multicultural practices, as well as practitioners and social workers.

Abstract

Cystic kidney diseases comprise a spectrum of genetic syndromes defined by renal cyst formation and expansion with variable extrarenal manifestations. The most prevalent disorder is the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). It is the most common monogenetic disorder in humans and accounts for 4.4% of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases in the U.S. Patients inevitably progress to ESRD and require renal replacement therapy in the form of dialysis or transplantation. Through advancements in genomics and proteomics approaches, novel genes responsible for cystic diseases have been identified, further expanding our understanding of basic mechanisms of disease pathogenesis. The hallmark among all cystic genetic syndromes is the formation and growth of fluid-filled cysts, which originate from tubular epithelia of nephron segments. Cysts are the disease, and treatment strategies are being developed to target prevention or delay of cyst formation and expansion at an early stage, however no such therapy is currently approved. This book reviews important aspects of polycystic kidney diseases, the latest scientific understanding of the diseases and syndromes, along with the therapies being developed.
