Description, classification, fonctionnement et évolution des animaux : une approche intégrée pour véritablement comprendre la diversité animale actuelle. Avec près d'1,6 million d'espèces décrites (et certainement encore bien plus à découvrir !), le monde animal est d'une richesse gigantesque. Et encore, ce que nous observons aujourd'hui n'est qu'un échantillon de ce que la Terre a connu, et connaîtra ! Devant cette immensité de formes différentes, pas facile de s'y retrouver...C'est pourtant tout l'objet de cet ouvrage, synthèse unique en langue française qui permet de répondre à trois questions essentielles : à quoi les animaux actuels ressemblent-ils ? Pourquoi sont-ils faits ainsi ? Comment sont-ils apparus ? L'ouvrage dépasse la biologie animale traditionnelle pour proposer une vision intégrée et dynamique de la diversité animale, faisant appel à la biologie évolutive, la zoologie, la biologie fonctionnelle, la systématique, la paléontologie et même l'histoire des sciences. L'ensemble est très richement illustré de plus de 250 photographies et 120 dessins en couleurs, et couvre 26 groupes d'animaux terrestres et aquatiques incluant tous ceux classiquement enseignés.L'ouvrage est organisé en quatre parties : 1. L'évolution : à la base de la diversité ; 2. Reconstruire l'histoire de la diversité animale ; 3. Une approche fonctionnelle des Métazoaires ; 4. Aperçu de la diversité actuelle. Ce livre s'adresse avant tout aux étudiants de premier cycle universitaire et à ceux préparant le CAPES SVT, mais intéressera également les enseignants qui y trouveront notamment une synthèse historique permettant d'appréhender la multiplicité des ouvrages de biologie animale, qui peuvent diverger dans la classification qu'ils présentent et dans les discours évolutifs qu'ils véhiculent.

Seattle would not exist without animals. Animals have played a vital role in shaping the city from its founding amid existing indigenous towns in the mid-nineteenth century to the livestock-friendly town of the late nineteenth century to the pet-friendly, livestock-averse modern city. When newcomers first arrived in the 1850s, they hastened to assemble the familiar cohort of cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, and other animals that defined European agriculture. This, in turn, contributed to the dispossession of the Native residents of the area. However, just as various animals were used to create a Euro-American city, the elimination of these same animals from Seattle was key to the creation of the new middle-class neighborhoods of the twentieth century. As dogs and cats came to symbolize home and family, Seattleites' relationship with livestock became distant and exploitative, demonstrating the deep social contradictions that characterize the modern American metropolis. Throughout Seattle's history, people have sorted animals into categories and into places as a way of asserting power over animals, other people, and property. In The City Is More Than Human, Frederick Brown explores the dynamic, troubled relationship humans have with animals. In so doing he challenges us to acknowledge the role of animals of all sorts in the making and remaking of cities.
