Abstract

"A young wife in a nineteenth-century Sicilian village, Marta is deeply in love with her husband Rocco and pregnant with his child. But when Rocco discovers a letter written to Marta by a would-be suitor, he falsely accuses her of infidelity and banishes her from their home. Soon the whole village turns against the supposed adulteress, setting in motion a series of tragic events that culminates in the loss of Marta's family home and business, as well as the deaths of her father and newborn child. Plunged into poverty and treated as a social leper, with practically nothing else to lose, Marta is determined to claw her way back into a society bent on excluding her. The Outcast is an early masterwork from Nobel Prize-winning Italian author Luigi Pirandello that combines elements of Zolaesque naturalism with emerging modernist aesthetics. This fresh English translation, the first one in nearly one hundred years, showcases Pirandello's deft play with language and his use of irony"--

Abstract

Abstract

Far from the stereotypes that often encompass the image of Sicily and mask the complexity of the reality, this work seeks to show the richness and diversity of the Sicile(s) d’aujourd’hui. Within, the most eminent representatives of civil and judicial society, cultural actors and arts specialists (literature, theatre, cinema, comics) compare their analyses. Some great artists discuss the role of artistic creation in the country’s future, thus revealing the constructive tension between the weight of history and the urgency of the current age, between memory of tradition and innovative trends, between the passivity of hopelessness and the energy of revolt. The artists from Sicily do not turn into themselves, but as implicated in social, political, ethical and aesthetic dynamics, they appear to be a vital essential force. The reader will be met with a sort of “laboratory”—Sicilian, Italian and/or European—of courage and creativity.

Abstract

An original and beautifully written book on changing perspectives in the art of theater. Through a study of nine plays-Oedipus Rex, Bérénice, Tristan und Isolde, Hamlet, Ghosts, The Cherry Orchard, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Noah, Murder in the Cathedral-the author shows how all playwrights seek to "hold the mirror up to nature" and how in this respect the art of drama is always the same, varying only with the philosophical and aesthetic concepts of each age. The Idea of a Theater will delight both readers with a special interest in drama and those who read drama as a source of insight into man's nature and man's changing ideas of himself. Originally published in 1949.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
