"The treatise On the Sublime, whose author, conventionally referred to as 'Longinus', wrote under Nero and Vespasian, provides a hermeneutic framework that allows avoiding retrospective interpretations derived from modern aesthetic doctrines. As characterized by 'Longinus', the concept of the sublime sheds new light on the Thebaid and helps to better define the poetic world of Statius' epic. The Thebaid and the treatise share certain crucial features: both defend and illustrate a daring and rule-breaking approach to the poet's creative activity; both focus on rushing passions; both favor situations that go against the audience's beliefs and expectations and thus trigger a response that should encompass feelings of terror and admiration. The sublimity of the Thebaid shows itself in the rapture that seizes the poet and his characters, and in the dramatic depiction of horrible deeds and disruptions of nature. Last but not least, one can rely on the treatise in order to explore the generic interplay that is at work in the Thebaid. Indeed, it turns out that Statius, by developing the topic of tyranny, creates a poetics of passion whose tragic dimension clashes with the norms of epic diction and the traditional treatment of heroism. This liberty taken with genre membership accounts for the complex portrayal of characters and actions."--

Contrary to widely held assumptions, the early modern revival of ps-Longinus' On the Sublime did not begin with the adaptation published by Boileau in 1674; it was not connected solely with the Greek editions that began to appear from 1554; nor was its impact limited to rhetoric and literature. Manuscript copies began to circulate in Quattrocento Italy, but very few have been studied. Neither have the ways the sublime was used, in rhetoric and literature, but also in the arts, architecture and the theatre been studied in any systematic way. The present volume is a first attempt to chart the early modern translations of Peri hupsous , both in the literal sense of the history of its dissemination by means of editions, versions and translations in Latin and vernacular languages, but also in the figurative sense of its uses and transformations in the visual arts in the period from the first early modern editions of Longinus until its popularization by Boileau. Contributors include Francis Goyet, Hana Gründler, Lydia Hamlett, Sigrid de Jong, Helen Langdon, Bram Van Oostveldt, Eugenio Refini, Paul Smith, and Dietmar Till.

"This is the first new edition in English for more than half a century of one of the most influential works in the entire history of aesthetics, the treatise On the Sublime, whose author is unknown but usually called Longinus. It was On the Sublime which was chiefly responsible, in the early modern period, for giving the vocabulary of 'sublimity' the important place which it has held ever since in critical discourse about literature, visual art, music, and the experience of nature. This edition contains a substantial introduction to the contents of the work; a newly edited Greek text with facing English translation (designed to be both accurate and readable, and therefore of assistance to non-specialists); and a comprehensive commentary which deals with everything from details of language to the work's overarching ideas and arguments. The book undertakes the fullest and most probing engagement with On the Sublime yet attempted in any language. It advances many new interpretations and seeks to make sense of the treatise both as a remarkable document in its own right and in relation to the traditions of ancient Greek and Roman literature, philosophy, and criticism. In addition to supplying all the needs of scholars and students directly concerned with Graeco-Roman culture, the introduction and translation make the book also of value to the many other kinds of readers--philosophers of aesthetics, art-historians, literary critics, historians of ideas, and more besides--who are interested in the ancient origins as well as the modern development of concepts of the sublime."--

Back cover: In this study, Christopher T. Holmes offers an analysis of Hebrews 12:18-29 and its role in the larger argument of Hebrews. It argues that the first-century treatise, De Sublimitate, provides a significant context for interpreting the rhetoric and style of Hebrews and sheds new light on the thought and genre of Hebrews.
