Cette "Introduction sommaire à une littérature en devenir" (une vingtaine d'écrivains) évoque, comme l'écrit Clément Trudel, "avec empathie un monde de mythes et de récits que les Marius Barbeau avaient commencé de codifier". La première partie traite de la littérature orale (p. 23-65), la seconde de la littérature écrite (p. 69-184). A noter le chapitre V consacré aux premiers écrits (articles, essais politiques) publiés par des Amérindiens. Bibliographie signalétique structurée, p. 187-201. L'auteure est co-fondatrice et présidente du Centre de recherches amérindiennes du Québec. Recommandé (même si la recherche de l'auteure s'arrête en 1990).
