Islamic mysticism was contested from the formative period of Islam till the present. Criticism of and opposition to mystical conceptions of Islam and their adherents constitute an integral part of an ongoing debate inside the Islamic tradition. Controversies and polemics concerning Islamic mysticism often shaped and coincided with socio-political configurations. This volume results from a collective effort by a group of Islamicists and area specialists with a variety of disciplinary orientations to arrive at a comprehensive view of these controversies and polemics wherever and whenever found. The thirty-five contributions and the introduction are united in their historicising approach, while taking into account the wider socio-political context. Detailed indexes facilitate consultation of the work and give it an added value as work of reference and research tool.

Amolo, Erzbischof von Lyon (841-852), Nachfolger des wesentlich bekannteren Agobard, knüpfte in mehrfacher Hinsicht an dessen Wirken an. So verfasste er den Traktat 'Liber de perfidia Iudaeorum', in dem er sich zunächst auf theologischer Ebene mit der jüdischen Religion auseinandersetzt und versucht, die in seinen Augen falschen Glaubenslehren der Juden zu widerlegen. Den zweiten Teil des Traktats dominiert eine kirchenrechtlich-historische Darstellung des Umgangs christlicher Herrscher mit ihren jüdischen Untertanen. Dabei berücksichtigt Amolo vor allem spätantike Herrscher und die Konziliengesetzgebung im Merowingerreich. Als Vorlage für die am 17. Juni 845 in Meaux zusammengetretene westfränkische Reichssynode erfuhr dieser Abschnitt von Amolos Traktat weite Verbreitung. Der vorliegende Band bietet die kritische Edition des 'Liber de perfidia Iudaeorum' nebst deutscher Übersetzung und eine detaillierte Analyse der teils ungewöhnlichen Quellen, aus denen Amolo von Lyon schöpfte. Darüber hinaus wird die Entstehungsgeschichte des Traktats anhand seiner Vorlagefunktion für das Konzil von Meaux/Paris rekonstruiert.
