Abstract

This volume brings together original papers from language education scholars from around the world to explore, exemplify, and discuss the multiplicity of boundary crossing in language education. It emphasizes the potential of boundary crossing for expansive learning, and aims to generate new insights, through boundary crossing, into the complexity of language education and approaches to innovative practices. This volume also underscores the important role of expert boundary crossers. In particular, it aims to honor G. Richard Tucker, Paul Mellon University Professor Emeritus of Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University, celebrating his distinguished scholarship on language education and paying tribute to the inspiration and mentorship he has given to the contributors of this volume to cross boundaries academically and professionally. This volume is organized into four sections, namely, language learning and development; teachers and instructional processes; program innovation, implementation, and evaluation; and language-in-education policy and planning. These sections or themes, which are necessarily cross-cutting, also represent the major areas of scholarship where Prof. Tucker has made distinguished contributions for over half a century.

Abstract

This book addresses the validity of think-aloud protocols (TAPs) in L2 writing research through a mixed methods study and proposes effective approaches for their valid implementation. The book uncovers the reactive effects that TAPs have on L2 writing performance and processes, and examines how individual factors moderate this reactivity. It further presents and categorizes participants' perceptions regarding reactivity and veridicality. To enhance veridicality, the book identifies incomplete TAPs using retrospective verbal reports as a reference point. Recommendations for utilizing TAPs include considering participants' individual differences, recent experiences, and emotions. This book will be valuable to educators teaching methodology in second or foreign language education, applied linguistics, or writing research, and to L2 researchers or graduate students with a broad interest in research methods, process-based research, or writing studies, or planning to incorporate TAPs into their research.

Abstract

This book presents a longitudinal research which coversa linguistic approach to understand and observelanguage learner agency. It makes connections between agency in discourse analyses and agency in applied linguistics by examining how learner agency is manifested in autobiographic oral narratives and influenced by contextual factors. This book also demonstrates that agency is not a fixed entity that English learners possess, but a dynamic construct constantly negotiated by the learners with the social world. It is the result of their identity positioning and repositioning within a complex and ever-changing context. Learner identities, either actual or imagined, are significantly correlated with their investment in English and their English learning process. This book sheds new light on teaching English as a foreign language and gives inspirations for enhancing English learners' agency in contemporary context of China. As learner agency should be treated in a dynamic and process view, a low level of agency manifested in a particular period or in a certain context may not necessarily persist in later periods or extend to other contexts. Provided with supportive contextual conditions and taking on positive and powerful identities, language learners are well on the course for higher levels of agency.

Abstract

This edited collection presents the latest work on the application of discursive psychology and conversation analysis to sensitive interactions and interventions in healthcare. While all interactions in healthcare settings can be challenging for both patients and practitioners, this book pays particular attention to topics that are likely to be especially sensitive, such as communication around sexual health, palliative care, suicide prevention, medically unexplained symptoms, or chronic pain. Across nine chapters authors discuss how discursive psychology and conversation analysis can help us understand what people actually do in conversations, hence providing a strong basis for developing and testing training methods that support health professionals to reflect on their interactions with patients. Addressing both practical and theoretical challenges in the development and implementation of such training sessions, this volume establishes the state-of-the-art in this area and offers a valuable tool for academics and researchers in discourse analytical fields, practitioners working to improve communication in health, as well as meeting facilitators in education or work settings related to healthcare. Petra Sneijder is Associate Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, the Netherlands. As part of the Communication in Digital Transition research group, she analyses societal issues using a discursive psychological perspective. She is specifically interested in translating findings into practical implementation, using (digital) interventions. Annette Klarenbeek is Professor of Applied Sciences and part of the Communication in Digital Transition research group at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, the Netherlands. Her work takes an interactional perspective on communication with an emphasis on conversational communities.
