La Ligue de l'enseignement est plus célèbre que réellement connue. Cet ouvrage est le premier à en retracer l'histoire, au moment où elle célèbre ses 150 ans. Véritable institution de la iiie République, relais de l'État enseignant, elle a eu longtemps une solide réputation d'anticléricalisme. Devenue Confédération générale des œuvres laïques en 1926, elle prend une part active à la querelle scolaire, et développe des activités de loisirs et de sport pour enraciner une société civile laïque. Elle s'oppose à la loi Debré et à la ve République. Mais les changements de société à partir des années 1960-1970 l'obligent à d'incessants efforts d'adaptation. Après 1984, elle entreprend un aggiornamento idéologique et redéfinit les axes de son combat et de sa perspective laïques. Son rapport à l'institution scolaire change avec le déclin de la société enseignante. En prenant pour objet l'un des plus importants réseaux associatifs français, à mi-chemin d'un parti, d'un syndicat, d'une société de pensée et d'une entreprise d'économie sociale, ce livre éclaire les enjeux passés et présents de la laïcité dans notre culture politique et l'histoire d'un militantisme d'éducation populaire confronté aujourd'hui à la professionnalisation, à la baisse drastique des subventions, et au « tout marchand ». Il se veut ainsi une contribution à une connaissance renouvelée du champ politique et de la société française.

The Radical Bourgeoisie traces the development of the political culture that sustained the Third Republic in France. It examines the centrality of education to Republican ideology and describes the political organization of the center-left alliance that coalesced in the Radical Party. Professor Auspitz challenges several widely held interpretations of modern French history and reassesses the role of French Radicals as thinkers and politicians. Against complaints of the left that they were petty bourgeois ideologues, of the right that they were dogmatic atheists, and of the center that they were small-minded and corrupt, Professor Auspitz attempts to vindicate the radicals as generous in their objectives, serious in their reflections, and effective in their strategies. The study also explains the importance of anticlericalism and of a new concern for the role of women and workers in defining an emerging secular culture.
