Abstract

Bright 2 is a vibrant selection of architectural illumination and light installation projects that are setting trends in the creative use of light from all over the world. This illuminating volume -- the second in the Bright series -- captures the feeling of how light and projections can elevate a building, bridge or even an entire city centre. The 44 illustrated projects have been realised by a number of top-level artists, designers and manufacturers, all of whom are setting trends in the creative use of light. Divided into three chapters -- dynamic, interactive and static -- the 8-page articles not only demonstrate the dazzle, spectacle and lure of the bright lights in big cities, with their descriptive texts and outstanding imagery; they are also brimming with technical details. All the major works include descriptions outlining exactly how the lighting designers have sculpted the illuminated scenarios, detailing the specific challenges they had to overcome. This book is an up-to-date reference tool for professionals working with light in design, architecture and the artistic fields. Bright 2 reflects the current role of illumination as a multifaceted design element and, in doing so, literally sheds new light on the future of architecture and design.

Abstract

For more than fifty years, James Turrell (*1943, Los Angeles), one of the most prominent artists of our time, has devoted himself to the exploration of the (im)materiality and perception of light. Turrell succeeds like no other artist in making it possible to experience light as an artistic medium through the senses and the intellect alike. He himself describes his art as "perceptual art." In his large installations the artist floods accessible spaces with light, which spills out in soft seas of color or intensely glowing, luminous fogs, taking viewers to the limits of their perception. This book provides a comprehensive view of Turrell's oeuvre and unites works of art from various phases of his career from the 1960s onward.

Abstract

"The fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization and, above all, by 'the disenchantment of the world.'" Max Weber's statement remains a dominant interpretation of the modern condition: the increasing capabilities of knowledge and science have banished mysteries, leaving a world that can be mastered technically and intellectually. And though this idea seems empowering, many people have become disenchanted with modern disenchantment. Using intimate encounters with works of art to explore disenchantment and the possibilities of re-enchantment, Arts of Wonder addresses questions about the nature of humanity, the world, and God in the wake of Weber's diagnosis of modernity. Jeffrey L. Kosky focuses on a handful of artists-Walter De Maria, Diller + Scofidio, James Turrell, and Andy Goldsworthy-to show how they introduce spaces hospitable to mystery and wonder, redemption and revelation, and transcendence and creation. What might be thought of as religious longings, he argues, are crucial aspects of enchanting secularity when developed through encounters with these works of art. Developing a model of religion that might be significant to secular culture, Kosky shows how this model can be employed to deepen interpretation of the art we usually view as representing secular modernity. A thoughtful dialogue between philosophy and art, Arts of Wonder will catch the eye of readers of art and religion, philosophy of religion, and art criticism.
