"Récente « crise grecque », prospérité qui ne se dément pas outre-Rhin, orientations économiques de Bruxelles : sans cesse l'actualité rappelle l'influence toujours agissante, louée ou critiquée, des ordolibéraux allemands. Cet ouvrage vient donc à son heure pour faire, avec toute la rigueur nécessaire alliée à un grand souci de clarté pédagogique, un point inédit et actualisé sur le sujet, au-delà des clichés et polémiques habituels. Patricia Commun ne s’y contente pas d’utilement revenir sur l’histoire intellectuelle et politique de l’Allemagne des années 1930-1960 pour contextualiser l’itinéraire de ces économistes et sociologues antinazis (Walter Eucken, Wilhelm Röpke, le futur Chancelier Ludwig Erhard en particulier) à l’origine de la pensée ordolibérale. Elle expose ce que sont les piliers doctrinaux de l’« économie sociale de marché » qui en découle : ancrage dans un ordre (d’où le terme « ordo ») juridique du respect des règles assurant la libre concurrence sur fond de liberté des prix et des échanges, de stabilité monétaire, d’équilibre budgétaire et d’une fiscalité modérée. Et souligne ses heureux effets : cogestion pragmatique permettant d’éviter les pièges d’un État-providence, cohésion sociale arrimée à un tissu de PME créatives. L’auteur montre enfin en quoi ce libéralisme pratique, consensuel et original à l’allemande qui répudie aussi bien le dirigisme et le « constructivisme » que le laissez-faire a profondément renouvelé la pensée libérale classique et refondé son assise épistémologique."
