Doelstelling: Deze masterproef is het resultaat van een onderzoek naar de perceptie van Spanje in de buitenlandse pers. Er wordt onderzocht of in het actuele beeld van Spanje nog sporen terug te vinden zijn van de zwarte legende. Middelen of methode: Een krantenonderzoek wordt uitgevoerd in vier Europese kranten. De artikels die dit krantenonderzoek oplevert, worden onderworpen aan kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse met specifieke aandacht voor het gebruik van mediaframes. Resultaten: Uit de resultaten van het onderzoek blijkt dat men in de buitenlandse pers nog vaak op directe of indirecte manier verwijst naar de invloed van de zwarte legende op de beelvorming van Spanje. Deze verwijzingen duiden echter nagenoeg nooit op de slechte reputatie die Spanje vandaag zou hebben als gevolg van haar geschiedenis. In de meerderheid van de artikels zien we immers een duidelijk onderscheid tussen het verleden en het heden. Enerzijds verwijst men vaak expliciet naar het 'negatieve' verleden, waarin het reaccionaire, extreem conservatieve en katholieke imago van Spanje in de zwarte legende een belangrijke rol speelt. Anderzijds benadrukt men het 'positieve' heden, waarin de vele sociale hervormingen door de socialistische regering en de liberale en progressieve koers die Spanje de laatste jaren vaart vooral belangrijk zijn.

Uno de los fenómenos culturales más dinámicos del Siglo de Oro fue la Leyenda Negra, el sistema de imágenes que utilizó y difundió la propaganda antihispánica del momento, principalmente la de algunos de los enemigos de la Monarquía Hispánica como holandeses, ingleses y protestantes alemanes. Este libro examina la Leyenda Negra como un fenómeno dialógico y muestra cómo dramaturgos como Lope de Vega, Vélez de Guevara o Rojas Zorrilla conocían la argumentación del enemigo y cómo reaccionaron a ella de distintas maneras.

The phrase "The Black Legend" was coined in 1912 by a Spanish journalist in protest of the characterization of Spain by other Europeans as a backward country defined by ignorance, superstition, and religious fanaticism, whose history could never recover from the black mark of its violent conquest of the Americas.
