L'histoire impériale de l'Espagne a commencé bien avant le règne de Charles Quint. Elle trouve ses origines dans le petit royaume astur-léonais du xe au xie siècle, dont quelques rois furent désignés imperatores. Elle connaît son développement le plus étonnant au cours de la période qui va du règne d'Alphonse VI de Castille-León (1065-1109) à celui de son petit-fils Alphonse VII (1126-1157). Ces deux souverains n'hésitèrent pas à s'autoproclamer « empereurs des Espagnes » et à revendiquer une souveraineté qui, dans cette période de Reconquête, s'étendait idéalement sur toute la péninsule Ibérique. Ce livre retrace l'histoire de ce phénomène singulier que l'historiographie espagnole du milieu du xxe siècle avait érigé en mythe identitaire hispanique. Par un regard dépassionné sur les sources, il s'attache à dégager les procédés de légitimation monarchique dont témoigne l'usage du concept d'empire dans le León médiéval.

The reign of Alfonso VII occupied more than a quarter century during which the political landscape of medieval Spain was altered significantly. It was marked by the enhancement of royal administration, an increased papal intervention in the affairs of the peninsular church, and the development of the church's territorial structure.
