De foto's in 'I loved my wife' werden gemaakt op het terrein van 16 Duitse psychiatrische instellingen. In deze instellingen werden gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog tienduizenden kinderen vermoord. Om het leven gebracht omdat ze als ongeneeslijk ziek werden aangemerkt. De kosten om hen in leven te houden waren te hoog voor de samenleving, een stellingname die kracht werd bijgezet met films en andere propaganda gericht tegen personen die de maatschappij niets te bieden hadden. Eufemismen voor de moorden waren "genadedood" en "euthanasie". Voorzieningen treffen voor de instellingen en zorg voor de slachtoffers van erfelijke ziekten werd gezien als het tegenwerken van de natuurlijke selectie. De kosten hiervan zouden moeten worden gedragen door gezonde arbeiders, die hierdoor geld werd afgenomen dat hun een beter leven kon bieden.0.
