This is the first volume exclusively devoted to research methods in language policy and planning (LPP). Each chapter is written by a leading language policy expert and provides a how-to guide to planning studies as well as gathering and analyzing data Covers a broad range of methods, making it easily accessible to and useful for transdisciplinary researchers working with language policy in any capacity Will serve as both a foundational methods text for graduate students and novice researchers, and a useful methodological reference for experienced LPP researchers Includes a series of guidelines for public engagement to assist scholars as they endeavor to incorporate their work into the public policy process.

This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For ""classic"" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the m

This chapter presents the results of a study on interlanguage variation. The production of four L2 learners of Italian, tested four times at yearly intervals while engaged in four oral tasks, is compared to that of two native speakers, and analysed with quantitative CAF measures. Thus, time, task type, nativeness, as well as group vs. individual scores are the independent variables and complexity, accuracy, and fluency are the dependent ones. Results show how both L2 learners and native speakers display situational variation, but with clear differences amongst the two groups. Longitudinally

Routledge Introductions to Applied Linguistics is a series of introductory level textbooks covering the core topics in Applied Linguistics, primarily designed for those beginning postgraduate studies, or taking an introductory MA course as well as advanced undergraduates. Titles in the series are also ideal for language professionals returning to academic study. The books take an innovative 'practice to theory' approach, with a 'back-to-front' structure. This leads the reader from real-world problems and issues, through a discussion of intervention and how to engage with these concerns, before finally relating these practical issues to theoretical foundations. Additional features include a glossary of key terms, and discussion questions. Following the back-to-front approach of the series, the book takes problematic issues in language pedagogy as its starting points. These are then examined in terms of second language acquisition. Each chapter begins with a look at the pedagogical proposals found in teacher guides and then asks 'Do these proposals accord with what we know about how languages are acquired?' Pedagogical topics covered include teaching methods, syllabus design, explicit instruction, comprehension versus production-based instruction, task-based instruction, authentic materials, the role of the learners' first language in the classroom, error correction and catering for individual differences. Including a glossary of key terms and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter, and assuming no prior knowledge of second language acquisition, this is the ideal text for all students studying language teaching methods, language teacher education, English teaching methodology and second language acquisition modules in advanced undergraduate and postgraduate/graduate TESOL and Applied Linguistics courses.

"How does a bilingual acquire, comprehend, produce, and control multiple languages in one mind? What are some of the cognitive and neurocognitive consequences of being a bilingual? These are just a few of the intriguing theoretical questions at the core of studying bilingualism from psycholinguistic and neurocognitive perspectives. For decades, researchers have been intrigued by how the human mind processes multiple languages. With intensified research efforts have come insightful inquiries, pioneering theories, and implications for future research. Perhaps an example is one the earliest and most studied questions related to psycholinguistic perspectives of bilingualism: Whether humans have a separate or shared (whether fully- or partially-shared) system for the representation and cognitive processing of multiple languages (Kolers, 1963; McCormack, 1977; Weinreich, 1953). Although much progress has been made, this question will continue to be one of many topics of interest in this handbook"-- "How does a human acquire, comprehend, produce and control multiple languages with just the power of one mind? What are the cognitive consequences of being a bilingual? These are just a few of the intriguing questions at the core of studying bilingualism from psycholinguistic and neurocognitive perspectives. Bringing together some of the world's leading experts in bilingualism, cognitive psychology and language acquisition, The Cambridge Handbook of Bilingual Processing explores these questions by presenting a clear overview of current theories and findings in bilingual processing. This comprehensive handbook is organized around overarching thematic areas including theories and methodologies, acquisition and development, comprehension and representation, production, control, and the cognitive consequences of bilingualism. The handbook serves as an informative overview for researchers interested in cognitive bilingualism and the logic of theoretical and experimental approaches to language science. It also functions as an instrumental source of readings for anyone interested in bilingual processing"--

In developing this summary and commentary, I have chosen to highlight the connections the authors make to the practice of instructed second language acquisition and their rationale. To that end, I have classified the pedagogical applications, implications and extrapolations offered by the authors into three categories. First, we find suggestions for particular types of instructional materials, activity sequences, and/or approaches to instruction. Second, we find recommendations for curricular changes and language programs in terms of the timing, sequencing and/or the content of instruction. Lastly, we find calls for teacher education and/or awareness of the processes and products of second language acquisition. I will summarize and comment on each chapter as it relates to these categories.
