Abstract

Winner of the 2017 CBHL Literature Award of Excellence in Landscape Design and ArchitecturePhyto presents the concepts of phytoremediation and phytotechnology in one comprehensive guide, illustrating when plants can be considered for the uptake, removal or mitigation of on-site pollutants. Current scientific case studies are covered, highlighting the advantages and limitations of plant-based cleanup. Typical contaminant groups found in the built environment are explained, and plant lists for mitigation of specific contaminants are included where applicable. This is the first book to address the benefits of phytotechnologies from a design point of view, taking complex scientific terms and translating the research into an easy-to-understand reference book for those involved in creating planting solutions. Typically, phytotechnology planting techniques are currently employed post-site contamination to help clean up already contaminated soil by taking advantage of the positive effects that plants can have upon harmful toxins and chemicals. This book presents a new concept to create projective planting designs with preventative phytotechnology abilities, 'phytobuffering' where future pollution may be expected for particular site programs.Filled with tables, photographs and detailed drawings, Kennen and Kirkwood's text guides the reader through the process of selecting plants for their aesthetic and environmental qualities, combined with their contaminant-removal benefits.

Abstract

Coping with post-industrial brownfields is an issue throughout Europe and North America. A point of departure for their broad rediscovery in Germany was the refurbishment of an abandoned steelworks from 1990 on by Peter Latz which subsequently became Duisburg Nord Landscape Park. There, industrial relics were not demolished or converted but perceived as integral parts of the overall concept and then imbued with new meaning and use. Many additional projects with a similar approach were created in the past decades, among them Parc del Clòt in Barcelona, Parque do Tejo e Trancão in Lisbon or Michel Desvigne’s Parc aux Angéliques in Bordeaux, currently under construction.0This book does not only describe a systematic framework for the use of post-industrial ruins it also contextualizes them in design history. The author, professor for landscape design at Copenhagen University, covers a wide range of topics, linking 19th century Romanticism’s preoccupation with ruins to industrial decline (exemplified by Detroit) and then on to the subsequent Renaissance of the transformed landscape and its refound beauty.

Abstract

City and country—these terms are generally regarded as opposites. The urban, with its constructed spaces and places, is separated from nature, with its mature landscapes and clearings. Yet, today’s landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. This catalogue is a plea to redefine the discipline’s position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrow’s society.

Abstract

Buildings cause around a third of carbon emissions in Switzerland, while internationally the amount can be even more. ‘Building Climate’ shows how to plan and build in a climate-friendly way, from spatial planning to architecture and landscape design. With more than 60 clear and concrete tips, it offers tools for architects seeking to achieve net zero. The texts are concise and written in such a way that everyone can learn something new, regardless of whether they are professionals or not. The book is intended to explain, arouse curiosity, reveal solutions, and remove the perceived hurdles on the way to net zero – a reminder of the importance of building for the future of our planet.
