In deze 5e druk is de informatie over chemicaliën verder aangepast op REACH en aan de nieuwe grenswaarden en informatie die in material safety datasheets zijn opgenomen. Nieuwe ontwikkelingen rond blootstellingsbeoordeling, zoals gebruik van de stoffenmanager en COSH-Essentials, zijn erin verwerkt. Hoofdstuk 1 tot en met 3 gaan in op algemene veiligheidskennis waarover de studenten moeten beschikken voor ze in het laboratorium gaan werken.In hoofdstuk 4 tot en met 9 wordt de nadruk gelegd op de mogelijke risico’s van diverse werkzaamheden met apparatuur en met stoffen. De te nemen veiligheidsmaatregelen worden hieruit afgeleid.Hoofdstuk 4 en 5 sluiten aan op de eerste eigen ervaringen in het laboratorium.Hoofdstuk 6 tot en met 9 zijn zo geschreven dat ze desgewenst in een andere volgorde kunnen worden behandeld, in aansluiting op de activiteiten van de studenten in het laboratorium.Hoofdstuk 10 en 11 gaan in op de manier van ingrijpen als, ondanks de genomen veiligheidsvoorzorgen, toch onverhoopt een calamiteit optreedt.De overige hoofdstukken hebben betrekking op meer specifieke werkzaamheden in laboratoria.
