Why is Collective Bargaining Failing in South Africa? offers an extensive analysis of the current nature of collective bargaining in South Africa. Collective bargaining is failing in South Africa because the parties to the process have failed to seek ways of achieving inclusive social development and of balancing the requirements of a competitive economy, the imperative for employment creation and the achievement of an ecologically sustainable environment. This means that many of the inequalities in the labour market that were created by apartheid remain unaddressed.

Globalization can contribute to growth and development, but as the recent financial crisis demonstrated, it also puts employment, earnings and labour standards at risk. This book examines the role that collective bargaining plays in ensuring that workers are able to obtain a fair share of the benefits arising from participation in the global economy and in providing a measure of security against the risk to employment and wages. At last: a concise, practical guide that shows managers how to create agility at the bargaining table through thoughtful planning and preparation in the weeks, months, and years before formal negotiations begin, and how to do that on top of your regular full-time job. Agility in labor agreement negotiations is the ability to recognize and respond in the moment to threats and opportunities, both anticipated and unexpected. Agility gives you the confidence to talk with a party you may or may not be able to trust and have a conversation the outcome of which will significantly impact your company and future collective bargaining agreements. Agility allows you to pivot.

This volume considers the development of the wage formation and wage bargaining institutions as a response to changes in the bargaining environment. These changes include a lower level of inflation and the growth in intraindustrial trade as firms have become more specialised. The response to these changes will depend on the current institutions and on the characteristics of the bargaining system. Generally there has been some move towards decentralisation; the question is what should be bargained centrally and which issues should be transferred to lower levels. Some of the contributions pay special attention to Nordic regimes using survey results gathered from the Finnish labour market partners.
