Digital media are transforming narratives and literary texts. They are also changing how we think about the present. It is against this backdrop that this volume inquires into the status of contemporary literature after digitalization: What role do new concepts of time play in writing? What forms of temporal reflection have shaped the novels of the last fifteen years? Which new modes of writing are being developed in digital media? Digitale Medien verändern, wie literarische Texte geschrieben werden und wie erzählt wird. Zugleich verändern sie die Auffassung von Gegenwart. Nicht-realistisches Erzählen ist hochpopulär, wurde aber häufig des politischen Eskapismus verdächtigt. Diese Studie bietet einen fiktionstheoretischen Zugang zum Erzählverfahren der Kontrafaktik und zeigt dessen Nähe zum politischen Schreiben auf. Analysen kontrafaktischer Werke von Christian Kracht, Kathrin Röggla, Juli Zeh und Leif Randt demonstrieren die Vielfalt und Relevanz politischer Realitätsvariationen in der Gegenwartsliteratur. Non-realistic narratives are currently immensely popular but have been frequently accused of political escapism. This study models counterfactuality using theories of fiction and shows the great affinity that this narrative technique shares with political writing. Analyses of works by Christian Kracht, Kathrin Röggla, Juli Zeh, and Leif Randt demonstrate the diversity and relevance of political variations on reality in contemporary literature.

Over the past roughly two decades, the interconnected concepts of reparation, restitution, and commemorative culture have gained renewed momentum – in academic discourse as much as in activist, artistic, and political contexts. This development insists on a critique of the material and systemic conditions of societies and global relations. In their 2018 report on the restitution of looted cultural artifacts, for example, Bénédicte Savoy and Felwine Sarr discuss restitutions in the light of a new ethics of relations. Individual acts of restitution, but also the processes of material and immaterial reparation that go with them, are viewed as mediators in the by definition irreparable legacy of colonialism and its present repercussions. A new ethics of relations might even go beyond anthropocentrism: The destruction of nature in the Anthropocene and the destruction of humanity that is colonialism both require a fundamental questioning of the premises of western modernity and a radically different relationship to the world. The present volume aims to examine different discourses and practices of reparation, bringing together perspectives from cultural studies, memory studies, post- or decolonial studies as well as literary studies. Chapters from these disciplines are complemented by contributions from the fields of philosophy, art, and literature in order to explore the multiple facets of reparation. Günter Grass has primarily been perceived by research and the public as an author. But he was also an influential political actor. His political work was not just limited to the Brandt era but also helped to define the Berlin Republic. By harnessing his communicative power, he shaped public discourses as an intellectual and advised top politicians, as unpublished sources and background conversations show. Günter Grass war nicht nur Schriftsteller und Künstler, sondern er äußerte sich auch kontinuierlich als Intellektueller zur Politik im In- und Ausland. Der "politische Günter Grass" wurde vielfach in den Medien kritisiert, bislang aber nicht wissenschaftlich fundiert erforscht. Sein Engagement wird vor allem auf die Ära Brandt reduziert, dabei prägte er auch in der Berliner Republik öffentliche Diskurse und stand im direkten Kontakt zu einer Vielzahl von SPD-Politikern. Er unterstützte sie nicht nur öffentlichkeitswirksam im Wahlkampf, sondern beriet sie auch bei informellen Treffen. Seine Resonanz war nicht auf Deutschland beschränkt, sondern als internationaler Intellektueller nutze er seine Bekanntheit auch im Ausland für politische Zwecke. Die Vielfältigkeit seines Engagements wird nachgezeichnet durch bislang unveröffentlichte Briefe mit Politikern sowie durch rund 50 Interviews mit führenden Politikern der SPD, wie beispielsweise Gerhard Schröder, Oskar Lafontaine, Rudolf Scharping, Björn Engholm, Martin Schulz oder Kurt Beck. Günter Grass verfügte als Intellektueller über eine kommunikative Macht in der Berliner Republik, mit deren Hilfe er einen direkten Einfluss auf politische Prozesse generierte.

In Climate Lyricism Min Hyoung Song articulates a climate change-centered reading practice that foregrounds how climate is present in most literature. Song shows how literature, poetry, and essays by Tommy Pico, Solmaz Sharif, Frank O'Hara, Ilya Kaminsky, Claudia Rankine, Kazuo Ishiguro, Teju Cole, Richard Powers, and others, and others help us to better grapple with our everyday encounters with climate change and its disastrous effects, which are inextricably linked to the legacies of racism, colonialism, and extraction. These works employ what Song calls climate lyricism-a mode of address in which a first-person "I" speaks to a "you" about how climate change thoroughly shapes daily life. This lyricism and its relationship between "I" and "you," Song contends, affects the ways readers comprehend the world, fostering a model of shared agency from which it can become possible to collectively and urgently respond to the catastrophe of our rapidly changing climate. In this way, climate lyricism helps to ameliorate the sense of being overwhelmed and feeling unable to do anything to combat climate change.
