I invite you to imagine a plan for a new and better society where everything is very coherent and makes a lot of sense and nothing is confusing or awful. No need to imagine. Here is the plan. The plan is illustrated. The plan is quite complicated. But not too complicated. I think you will be thrilled by it. I am certain you will be thrilled by it. No need to read massive volumes or use the internet. JUST READ THIS ONLY THIS.

This is the first major monographic publication dedicated to the work of German painter, Irma Blank (b. 1934) gathering a large selection of works from all her series, from the 1960s to the most recent ones initiated in 2017. It also includes work from her well-known Radical Writings series. Blank reflects the artist’s dedication to a minimal process of writing without words that questions the boundaries of communication and expression. She found out that ‘there is no such thing as the right word’ and started off working on her first abstract series at the end of the 1960s. The book is a chronological journey through her cyclical work, in which each series is an almost ascetic dedication to an emptied form of calligraphy. Some of the works are reproduced on a 1:1 scale allowing the reader a more intimate contact with the work. Features a recent conversation between Irma Blank and Hans-Ulrich Obrist.Published on occasion of the 2019-2021 touring exhibition, Irma Blank: Blank at Culturgest (Lisbon), MAMCO (Geneva), CAPC (Bordeaux), CCA (Tel Aviv), ICA (Milan), Museo Villa Dei Cedri (Bellinzona), and Bombas Gens Centre d’Art (Valencia).

The text in this book is essentially the libretto of the chamber opera Waiting for the Sibyl, which was made for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and first performed there in September 2019. Music for the opera was composed by Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Kyle Shepherd. The images and phrases were projected on different size screens in the opera, sometimes in sync with the sung text, sometimes independent of any sung text. In the opera production, the right-hand page generally had text, and the left-hand page had a mixture of drawings and the shadow of a dancer on stage cast onto the projection surface. In this book there are more and different drawings than are used in the opera. This book is compiled and published in the time of the covid-19 pandemic, a time in which it is not possible to perform the opera live. The project is undertaken in anticipation of the time when the opera can be seen in its full form again. Exhibition: Mudam, Luxemburg (2021).

In 1964, at age forty, Marcel Broodthaers (1924–1976) proclaimed that his years of writing poetry—of being "good for nothing" in his words—were over, and a brief but dazzling artistic career began. Considered a founding father of institutional critique, Broodthaers created hundreds of objects, books, films, photographs and exhibitions, including a "fictive" museum of modern art that evolved from an installation in his own home to a massive exhibition of over three hundred works representing eagles. In The Absence of Work, Rachel Haidu argues that all of Broodthaers's art is defined by its relationship to language. His perception of his poetry's "failure to communicate" led him to explore in his art the noncommunicative, nontransparent uses of words. Haidu's characterization of Broodthaers's contribution to institutional critique represents a major departure from the usual approach to this movement. With The Absence of Work, one of the first monographs on Broodthaers in English, Haidu demystifies a crucial and enigmatic figure in postwar and contemporary art.

South African artist William Kentridge draws on varied sources in his work, including philosophy, literature, early cinema, theatre and opera. This publication began life as a film constructed from a succession of drawings made in 2013 on the pages of old books; a second-hand reading in which books are translated into a filming of books, articulating the relationship between drawing, photography and film-making. It is both a narrative and an acknowledgement of the necessity of repetition, inconsistency and the illogical. Kentridge has made many flip books, but at 800 pages this is his most ambitious. He has also been making animated films for two decades.0.
