An international group of artists and scholars reflects on the nature and significance of education in contemporary society, introducing new perspectives on learning and creativity 'Back to the Sandbox' addresses critical issues of the education system from an intriguing new perspective: essays by leading thinkers juxtaposed with art projects, intended for kindergarten through adult. The core issues include democracy in education, creativity, transdisciplinarity, neuroplasticity, thinking versus memorizing, science versus art and humanities. Both artists and scholars explore specific topics while guided by one framing question central to educators' and students' concerns today: What education do we need? The volume includes several lead essays and eighteen shorter texts from international scholars. Gert Biesta presenteert in dit boek een nieuwe benadering van hedendaagse kunsteducatie door te laten zien welke unieke mogelijkheden de kunsten bieden om in dialoog te zijn met de omringende wereld. Deze benadering gaat uit van onderwijzen als een proces van tonen, waarbij de docent aan de leerling laat zien wat er in de wereld goed, belangrijk of betekenisvol kan zijn om aandacht aan te besteden. Aan de hand van de 'Aktion' uit 1965 van Joseph Beuys, 'Hoe men afbeeldingen uitlegt aan een dode haas', waarvan veel afbeeldingen in dit boek zijn opgenomen, maakt Biest duidelijk hoe dit proces werkt.

Het belang van kunsteducatie wordt door een breed publiek erkend. Kunst en cultuur zijn vaste ingrediënten van ons bestaan. Ze helpen ons de wereld te begrijpen en onze levens kleur geven. Net daarom is het verrassend dat in het Vlaamse onderwijs kunstzinnige doelstellingen zo schaars zijn. De leraar die de wolken meet breekt een lans voor meer kunst op school. Vanuit hun verscheidene achtergronden beargumenteren tientallen experts en leraren hoe dat kan, en hoe we de tijd die we in de klas aan kunst besteden nuttiger kunnen invullen.
