LITERATURE: HISTORY & CRITICISM. This book gives a historical and critical introduction to the genre of crime fiction, from Edgar Allan Poe's first detective story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, in 1841 to the present day. It concentrates chiefly on three branches of Crime Fiction: the classic detective whodunit, the thriller in which the protagonist is opposed either to a powerful conspiracy or to society at large, and the hardboiled private-eye story, or detective thriller, which mixes aspects of the other two.

Contemporary culture is characterised by a peculiar desire for crime narratives. Novels, non-fiction books, films, TV series or podcasts that deal with real or fictional murders, acts of fraud or spectacular thefts attract a wide audience and often become the object of public fascination. The contributions to this volume trace this hunger for crime stories and evaluate both the aesthetic and ethical significance of them having become one of today’s leading narrative genres. With contributions by Sandra Beck, Juliane Blank, Johannes Franzen, Peter Hintz, Thomas Kniesche, Till Raether, Oliver Ruf, Simon Sahner, Dana Steglich, Eva Stubenrauch and Thomas Wortmann.

This book is one of the first English-language studies to chart the development of crime fiction in French from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It analyses the distinctive features of a French-language tradition and introduces readers to a rich and varied body of work. Each chapter examines a specific period, movement or group of writers, as well as engaging with wider debates on the place of crime fiction within contemporary French and European culture. From early twentieth-century pioneers, such as Gaston Leroux and Maurice Leblanc, to the phenomenal success of Georges Simenon, from May 68 to the gender politics of crime fiction and postmodern reinventions, this collection approaches crime fiction in an interdisciplinary manner, alive to the innovative and often critically informed perspective it provides on French society and culture. The book also includes short extracts in English translation and an extensive bibliography of critical material for further reading. Such resources are aimed at encouraging the reader to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of this potent and formidable narrative of modern times.

"Michael Tapper considers Swedish culture and ideas from the period 1965 to 2012 as expressed in detective fiction and film in the tradition of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Believing the Swedish police narrative tradition to be part and parcel of the European history of ideas and culture, Tapper argues that, from being feared and despised, the police emerged as heroes and part of the modern social project of the welfare state after World War II."--Publishers website.

Some of the most exciting research and teaching in the field of German Studies is being done on "genre fiction," including detective fiction, science fiction, and what is often called "poplit," to name but a few. Such non-canonical literature has long been marginalized by the German tradition of Bildung and the disciplinary practice of German literary studies (Germanistik). Even today, when the examination of non-canonical texts is well established and uncontroversial in other academic contexts, such texts remain understudied in German. And yet, the trend toward "German Studies" and "cultural studies" approaches within the field has raised considerable interest in the analysis of genre fiction, resulting in both a great deal of new scholarship and a range of new courses. This first broad treatment of German genre fiction brings together innovative new scholarship, foregrounding themes of gender, environmentalism, and memory. It is an ideal companion to research and teaching. Written in accessible English, it speaks to a wide variety of disciplines beyond German Studies.
