This book discusses the renewability of the political centre in European democracies. The recent environment of repeated bundles of crises, new social technologies, individualisation and the rise of populism has caused socio-psychological upheaval. As a consequence, the centre of open societies—the moderate middle ground—has been thinned out at the ballot box. This has led to the question: How might the political centre of liberal democracies be revived to preserve and further develop ‘democracy within democracy’ as the benchmark of dialogic moderation, community building, balance and reason? Has the traditionally designated format of the ‘catch-all party’ come to an end or does it have a future? Which models are available? Dieses Buch diskutiert die Erneuerbarkeit der politischen Mitte in europäischen Demokratien. Im Umfeld wiederholter Krisenbündel haben neue soziale Technologien, Individualisierung und Aufstieg des Populismus sozialpsychologische Umbrüche hervorgerufen. Als Folge davon wurde das Zentrum offener Gesellschaften – die gemäßigte Mitte – an den Wahlurnen ausgedünnt. Das hat zur Zukunftsfrage geführt: Wie wäre die politische Mitte liberaler Demokratien wiederzubeleben, um „Demokratie in der Demokratie“ als Maßstab dialogischer Mäßigung und Gemeinschaftsbildung, von Ausgleich und Vernunft zu wahren und weiterzuentwickeln? Contemporary intellectuals have rushed to embrace the concept of *#8220;community.” What does this tell us about American political thought? Why are intellectuals uneasy with modern liberal individualism and its institutional policy results? Why is political intellectual discourse dominated today by complaint?In The Dance with Community Robert Booth Fowler reflects upon these and related questions. “My goal,” he writes, “is to present contemporary political thought about community for what it is—a conversation interactive, spirited, and sometimes tough.”There have been many interpretations of the muchdiscussed decline in community spirit. Rather than offer another, Fowler steps back to look at the debate itself. He examines from the perspective of an intellectual historian the attention to community in current American political thought and explores the setting of that attention.He also identifies five alternative models of community integral to the current debates and sketches a clear image of each—its relationship to others, the logic of its appeal, and its emphases and problems. In each instance he places the model into the larger conversation over alternative communities and the value of community itself.
