Als Epoche ist Romantik Vergangenheit, als Phänomen bleibt Romantik aktuell. Das Buch will erklären, wie beide miteinander zusammenhängen. Bis heute werden Literatur, Filme, Musik, aber auch Lebenspraktiken und Weltanschauungen als „romantisch“ bezeichnet. Der Band untersucht, worauf sich diese Bezeichnung gründet und was sie mit der historischen Romantik verbindet. Die These ist, dass die historische Romantik durch Modellbildungsprozesse in zeitlich späteren Phasen fortwirkt. Solche Prozesse werden in exemplarischen Fallstudien analysiert: Welche prägnanten Modelle von Romantik lassen sich in den Künsten, aber auch in der sozialen Lebenswelt und der Wissenschaft beobachten? Welche Darstellungs-, Deutungs- und Handlungsmuster bilden sich heraus, die für die weitere Wirkungsgeschichte von Bedeutung sind?
