Hoe lang duurt duurzaamheid? Hoe eeuwig zingen de bossen? Wanneer komt de volgende ijstijd? Kunnen er nog grotere vloedgolven optreden dan die van Tweede Kerstdag 2004? Het zijn allemaal vragen die ons dwingen ver in de tijd vooruit te kijken. En niet alleen maar tot het jaar 2100, zoals de meeste klimaatmodellen doen: dat is de toekomst gemeten met de menselijke maat. We moeten minstens tot het jaar 10 000 kijken, omdat natuurlijke processen als klimaatverandering, zeespiegelstijging, aardbevingen en vulkanische erupties in veel grotere tijdschalen fluctueren. Omdat er over tienduizend jaar nog mensen zullen leven die de consequenties van onze huidige activiteiten ondervinden. Die misschien juist blij zijn met het beetje extra broeikasgas dat wij aan de atmosfeer hebben toegevoegd, want daardoor is de ijstijd waarin zij leven niet zo koud.Dit boek betoogt dat wij ook nu rekening moeten houden met die grotere tijdschalen, met de maat van de natuur. Het laat zien hoe we een aantal trends uit het geologische verleden naar de toekomst kunnen doortrekken. Want het spreekt niet vanzelf dat de toekomst moeilijker te voorspellen is naarmate hij verder weg ligt. We weten niet of het klimaat in het jaar 2100 warmer zal zijn dan nu, maar we kunnen wel voorspellen dat na de huidige warme tijd weer een ijstijd komt.

Famines are becoming smaller and rarer, but optimism about the possibility of a famine-free future must be tempered by the threat of global warming. That is just one of the arguments that Cormac O Grada, one of the world's leading authorities on the history and economics of famine, develops in this wide-ranging book, which provides crucial new perspectives on key questions raised by famines around the globe between the seventeenth and twenty-first centuries. The book begins with a taboo topic. O Grada argues that cannibalism, while by no means a universal feature of famines and never responsible for more than a tiny proportion of famine deaths, has probably been more common during very severe famines than previously thought. The book goes on to offer new interpretations of two of the twentieth century's most notorious and controversial famines, the Great Bengal Famine and the Chinese Great Leap Forward Famine. O Grada questions the standard view of the Bengal Famine as a perfect example of market failure, arguing instead that the primary cause was the unwillingness of colonial rulers to divert food from their war effort. The book also addresses the role played by traders and speculators during famines more generally, invoking evidence from famines in France, Ireland, Finland, Malawi, Niger, and Somalia since the 1600s, and overturning Adam Smith's claim that government attempts to solve food shortages always cause famines. Dertien duizend jaar lang had de mensheid plezier van een stabiel en betrouwbaar klimaat. Onze generatie is de laatste die dat voorrecht geniet. In het verleden veranderde ons klimaat van de ene dag op de andere van polair naar tropisch. Dat kan nu weer gebeuren. Vergeet het beeld van een zielig milieu dat het slachtoffer is van onze vervuiling. Het is precies omgekeerd. De natuur is een vindingrijk wild beest dat gemakkelijk driftig wordt. We zijn over de schreef gegeaan met het te tarten. Nu begint het van zich af te bijten.

ÿOver de geschiedenis van de mens zijn al hele bibliotheken volgeschreven. Maar pas recent worden de belangrijke gebeurtenissen uit het verleden ook in verband gebracht met ecologische en klimatologische oorzaken. Het klimaat was doorheen de geschiedenis immers nooit stabiel, maar vertoonde een duidelijke golfbeweging.
