The archive of the Egibi family from the 6th century BC originates in Babylon and covers a time span of more than 100 years and five generations. It is known as the largest and most important private archive from the Neo-Babylonian period. Although nearly 800 tablets were already published in cuneiform copies by the end of the 19th century, no comprehensive text edition and study of this archive has been completed so far. This book presents the first step and focuses on the purchase of land (date orchards and arable land) by the Egibi family. About 240 records (property titles and related debt notes, receipts, field plans, etc.) form the core of the archive and are closely interrelated with other aspects of the family's business. Nearly half of them were previously unpublished. The book provides transliterations ans translations of all texts, as well as copies of new material including hitherto unknown sealings of published tablets. The study shows how the Egibi family managed to accumulate considerable wealth in real estate over a relatively short period of time. The impact of inheritance and marriages and the way the estates were damaged are also examined.

Excavations at Late Bronze Age Ugarit (in Syria) have provided a wealth of information about economic activities within the city itself and in the Eastern Mediterranean more generally. This volume explores how economic agents in and around Ugarit operated in different exchange networks and how elite actors could gain power by operating across more than one network. By applying a Network-based model to both the textual and the archaeological data from the site of Ugarit, economic activities at the site are reconstructed in this volume. The textual evidence is investigated in detail, with special attention paid to the alphabetic economic texts and associated vocabulary. The archaeological evidence is examined seperately and both types of data are then used in tandem to reconstruct ancient economic relationships at Ugarit. This volume is of interest not only to specialists in Ugarit and Ancient Syria but to any scholar interested in exploring new methods for understanding ancient economic relationships.

Although only 147 tablets have been discovered at Beydar, and although almost all the tablets contain administrative texts, they are nevertheless of great importance for our understanding of the culture and the society of Northern Jazirah in the second half of the third millenium B.C. Until the discovery of tablets at Beydar, Northern Syria had not yielded any tablets dating to the Early Dynastic period. For the first time we get an idea not only of the language, the calender, the metrology and the pantheon of Northern Syria, but also of its political and cultic institutions. These documents are now published in this second issue in the Subartu-Series. It contains chapters on linguistics, historical evaluation, technical aspects, geography, sign lists, metrology, calendars, personal names, terminology, groups of documents, transliterations.
