"Drawing fashion" celebrates a unique collection of some of the most remarkable fashion illustrations from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. These original works define the fine art of illustrating fashion, from the collections of Chanel, Dior, Comme des Garçons and Poiret as well as Viktor & Rolf, Lacroix and McQueen. This book showcases fashion illustrators at their creative heights: Georges Lepape at the beginning of the century, Christian Bérard in the 1930s and forties, René Gruau in the 40's and 50's, Cecil Beaton in the fifties, Antonio throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, to current artists Mats Gustafson, Aurore de la Morinerie and François Berthoud. This collection was put together over the past 30 years by Joëlle Chariau of Galerie Bartsch & Chariau.

In the 1920s designers were inspired by the stage sets of the Ballets russes, the fabric designs, and costumes of Léon Bakst and creations by the Wiener Werkstätte. Women's increasing participation in sport, together with the introduction of energetic dance styles, meant that the way women dressed had to change, and technical advances gave rise to exciting new fabrics. Fashion designers created new silhouettes and innovative details, and used new colours and luxurious fabrics. Of equal importance was the use of typical Art Deco patterns for textile decoration.

From the styles of the early 1900s to those of the twenty-first century, John Peacock charts the development of women's fashion in all its aspects: couture wear, leisure wear, day wear, evening wear, bridal wear, underwear, and accessories. Fashion's greatest designers and designs are all here: from Worth's visiting dress, Chanel's suits, Balenciaga's classic gowns, Dior's New Look, and Mary Quant's mini-dresses to recent designs from the collections of Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, and others. Arranged by decade, the drawings are accompanied by complete descriptions of each garment and accessory, including the fabric, cut, and pattern. In this revised edition of Peacock's standard book, 155 new drawings have been added, together with detailed descriptions. The updated reference section includes a time chart summarizing the development of fashion, biographies of couturiers and designers, and a bibliography.
