This introduction to materials science both for students of engineering and physics and for the interested general public examines not only the physical and engineering properties of virtually all kinds of materials, but also their history, uses, development, and some of the implications of resource depletion and recycling. It covers all topics on materials from an entirely novel perspective: the role materials have played throughout history in the development of humankind and technologies. Specifically, it shows the connection between the technical and the cultural, economic, ecological, and societal aspects of materials science. It aims to whet the appetite of its readers and inspire them to further explore the properties and applications of metals, alloys, ceramics, plastics, and electronic materials by presenting easily understandable explanations and entertaining historical facts. Het leerboek materiaalkunde voor technici is een inleiding in de materiaalkunde voor studenten werktuigbouwkunde, vliegtuigbouwkunde, scheepsbouwkunde en aanverwante studies. Daarnaast zal het boek zijn weg vinden onder ontwerpers, constructeurs en materiaalkundigen, maar is het ook toegankelijk voor anderen die zijdelings met materiaalkunde te maken hebben, zoals bedrijfskundigen, forensisch onderzoek en chemisch technologen. 
Het boek is visueel opgezet, met een duidelijke indeling rond materiaalkeuze, materiaalkunde en materiaalkennis. Bij de materiaalkeuze per materiaalgroep wordt deels gebruik gemaakt van de bijzondere inzichtelijke wijze van presenteren van de 'methode Ashby'. Voor een meer gespecificeerde materiaalkeuze is meer materiaalkundige kennis nodig. Vandaar dat de groepskeuze is uitgebreid met kennis over specifieke legeringen. De materiaalspecificaties volgen de meest gebruikelijke Europese normaanduidingen, die met name ook aan DIN-normen gelieerd zijn. 
Het boek behandelt alle materialen die toegepast worden in werktuigbouwkundige constructies: metalen, kunststoffen en keramiek. Alle belangrijke keurzeaspecten komen daarbij aan de orde. Per materiaalgroep worden de belangrijkste eigenschappen besproken. Daarnaast wordt ingegaan op de verwerking van materialen, de beperkingen van materialen, het correct specificeren van materialen in een technische tekening of een ontwerp, enz. De belangrijkste gegevens van de materialen worden in tabelvorm gerubiceerd. 
Op veel plaatsen in het boek staan verwijzingen naar websites met meer gegevens, voorbeelden, toepassingen, enz. Op de website van de uitgever (www.academicservice.nl) is een document beschikbaar met alle verwijzingen als hyperlinks, zodat de genoemde internetpagina's rechtstreeks toegankelijk zijn.

Dit boek behandelt alle materialen die toegepast worden in werktuigbouwkundige conctructies, dat wil zeggen zowel metalen en kunststoffen als keramiek. Alle belangrijke keuze-aspecten komen daarbij aan de orde. Daarmee is dit boek vooral een onmisbaar handboek voor technisch ontwerpers, technici en ingenieurs. Anders gezegd: dit boek is in eerste instantie bestemd voor ge ruikers van materialen. 

Per materiaalgroep worden de belangrijkste eigenschappen besproken, en daarnaast hoe ze worden verwerkt, de beperkingen, hoe men materialen in een technische tekening of een ontwerp correct kan specificeren, enzovoort. Van ieder materiaal worden in de vorm van tabellen de belangrijkste gegevens gerubriceerd Daarnaast wordt in een bijlage een overzicht gegeven van de belangrijkste vakliteratuur. Ieder hoofdstuk wordt afgesloten met een ruim aanbod aan opdrachten. 

Aangezien de fysische en scheikundige eigenschappen uitgangspunt zijn voor de beschrijving van de materiaalsoorten, is dit boek uitstekend geschikt als inleiding in de materiaalkunde voor studenten werktuigbouwkunde, vliegtuigbouwkunde, scheepsbouwkunde en aanverwante studies.
